Yes the plug needs to be rated for 5HP.
The reason people suggest hardwiring is that receptacles cost a lot:as both of these weigh more than the big-box store comrpessors people always suggest direct wiring in.
Again, this is a home, personal shop that only I am in, but curious what "official" code says about these behemoths.
I am well aware of how much they cost. Hence why I was asking about what made something "portable" and requiring a plug vs the direct wire "stationary". I understand direct-wiring is much easier, since it doesn't require such expensive plugs. What I wasn't aware or unsure of is when something could change from one to the other, since this is heavier than most of the compressors people seem to continually suggest direct-wiring. i did think about doing that...but i didn't want a long, snake-of-an-extension cord all over the garage floor. i thought it might be something to trip over while working so i decided that a neatly installed outlet on the wall would be more organized and then a shorter extension cord if i needed it. thanks.Actually a little impressed you got that cord through the 90. You could have just put the receptacle next to the panel and used all that as an extension cord.

Also make should it's sloped 1/4" per foot so the electricity drains when you're done using it. Would make for a nasty shock if it doesn't drain.

yeah so a better solution is a receptacle in its own housing which are sold at the big box stores. though some may flag even that since these are used as surface mount receptacles...To me, 110.3(b) is the overriding catch-all: "Listed or labeled equipment shall be installed and used in accordance with any instructions included in the listing or labeling". The implications of that simple phrase is the cornerstone of NFPA70 and oversees the whole enchilada...
Here's the other thing: OSHA doesn't dig it, either. While I can't cite the code, the 4 biggest takeaways are 1.) the knockouts get kicked in which puts them close to live components, 2.) the knockouts get knocked out, exposing live components, and 3.) anecdoctally, it's found that most people run the grounding conductor (green) to the outlet's yoke, but don't bond the box. Relying on the yoke isn't code. and 4.), coupled with #3, being unsupported, to plug something in, you typically have to hold the box in one hand while plugging the device in with the other, greatly increasing the chances for electric shock.
(I read that on line somewhere in a publication by an OSHA engineer....can't remember where though)
