When I saw the DNS error, I was like "oh oh, It's the big one 'lizabeth!".

Ya gotta be pretty old to get that reference...

Wow! When I got the 404 message or whatever it was I thought it was the end of the world.
Thanks Ryan for your efforts and getting it back. The world is normal again.

Salute.

Been there done that! I was afraid it was not going well when I found it down several hours later.

Glad you got it back and we appreciate your hard word and how reliable this site is.

**** man... y'all thanking me... I need to be thanking you for being patient.

Crazy days... We good now though... Well, until the redesign launches in a couple of months or so. :)

Redesign????
Nooooooo. I hate change. The site is beautiful the way it is :D

Please tell me it's not a platform change to something like xenforo. I'm in 2 other forums that changed to that and I went from a frequent participant with thousands of posts to maybe checking in once a week and not posting anymore.

I've been in that situation before, and "critical server error" is not 3 words you ever want to see together in one sentence!

Every time I refreshed and saw that error come up, I though "Oh man, poor Ryan", and remembered all the late nights I've had trying to get systems back online.

Glad you got it sorted mate and really appreciate all you do to keep the best site on the internet up and running.

That's equal parts exciting and terrifying!

Thanks Ryan. Many of us missed GJ more than we thought we would. Definitely habit forming.

I missed the forum yesterday morning. If the outage was for a longer duration, I probably would have started jonesing as well.

Ryan - Issues happen from time to time. Thank you for keeping the ship sailing as smoothly as it does.

Cut from a previous thread -

Trust me fellas... I've been trying to convert to Xenforo for over a year now... Time and tech challenges keep getting in the way. It's gonna happen though.

As a guy that runs forums... I don’t understand how anyone could prefer VB over Xenforo... Xenforo is so much more intuitive to use, faster, cleaner, etc... I think it must just be the “I hate change” deal... I dunno?

I can say that we made the switch years ago on jalopyjournal.com... and after a period of “I hate change,” people have come around to preferring it over VB.

Regardless, it’s something that has to happen from a security and stabability standpoint. VB 3.8 is dead in the water, VB 5 is a security nightmare (I won’t risk our privacy for it), and Xenforo is just far more capable. Ready or not, it’s happening...

And yeah, I’m scared shitless about the transition.

"Server Upgrade". Mayhem always follows.

Glad you are back, one of the few sites on the web where posters don't go off the rails.

Took me a few seconds to get the 'lizabeth' reference, but then had a nice laugh. Funny show.

I've gone through a couple of tech forums that changed from VB to Xf I still like the VB back end better(it may just be familiarity breeds comfort) and Xf doesn't have the same easy to use group perms and PM system, heck at Sysnative they spent 6 months customizing Xf to make it feel and act like VB........................but time marches on.

Thanks for all your hard work, Ryan. I know I appreciate this forum. Not a big poster but have found the answer through search to several issues. Along with several new tools that I didn't know I needed.

I'll probably be out on xenforo, but I'm sure plenty will figure out a way to adapt and replace me so no big loss.

I hate the way PMs work. I hate the "userCP" interface. Vb may be antiquated but it looks much more simply structured.

Anyone who deals in server upgrades has been there. I practically had to pour my sweat out of a keyboard once as the store was getting ready to open and I was fighting an upgrade to a pharmacy system .

I'm assuming your upgrade issues also contributed to the mid-morning emails.

As one who's been on multiple forums for 20 years I've seen more than a few software changes and there's a pattern to how it goes for me. At first I hate it since everything I knew how to do is now done differently. But if I like the forum I just have to **** it up and learn to navigate the new system.

Invariably over the long term I come to realize the new system has many advantages over the old and come to like it.

With technology there's really no choice. You either adapt to change or get left behind.

I don't know one platform from another. Maybe I'll be lucky and the new platform will be the same as one of the other forums I'm on which would make the transition easy for me.

The best part of this type of problem is you can spend more time answering the same question from dozens of people than you spend working on the problem. Been there, done that.
