Sound deadening/sound proofing?

My shop is a corrugated steel building. The shop next door is constantly grinding and banging with the compressor running all day.

One thin steel wall separates us and I want to deaden the sound through that wall as much as possible.

14' tall and 40' long.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I'm looking at low cost methods to soundproof noises from a basement. The company I used to work for specified office partition walls be constructed of 2x4 metal studs with insulation, and 5/8" drywall in two layers on each side, alternating vertical and horizontal placements.

That would seem to have a good amount of mass for absorbing sound in addition to the fiberglass batts.

More sophisticated systems use rubber insulators between the structural and panel components, or rubber composite panels like dynamat. Even the knock-off stuff on ebay looks like more than I want to spend on that, and 14x40' is a lot to cover.

I built a soundproof room in my house a few years ago. I used to have 4am conf calls with Europe when we had a newborn. Bad combo.

From all the research I did, the one thing that stuck out more than anything else was that it's the vibrations that carry the sound. So adding foam to the walls is ok, but if you want to really deaden the sound, build a seperate wall that does not connect (even a bit) to the existing wall. Then use either regular insulation and/or the solid insulation board. For my room I did all 3... kept it as a seperate structure, used both regular bat insulation and foam board insulation then used regular sheetrock inside. It worked really well and was very sound proof considering my lack of carpentry skills.

Also a good idea to deaden the sheetmetal wall of the building. It's acting as a giant microphone and speaker all in one.

They make spray-on sound damping materials. They're kind of like undercoating. they stop the sheetmetal from vibrating too much. Unfortunately, they're a little on the expensive side.

If you glue some kind of damping material tightly to the metal, it will help absorb vibration (which turns into sound)

I was trying to come up with something quick and easy that he wouldn't have to put any time into, time is money thing.

Given time, you could put asphalt tar on the metal and lay 90# rolled roofing over it. Then build a 2x4 wall about an inch off the newly covered wall and put R-19 bats for a 2x6 wall in place, then cover with 2 layers of 5/8" firerock alternating seams like Mike said, you'd have a hour firewall on your side anyway. That's about as cheap a solution I can come up with, but there is labor involved.

What about floor epoxy on the walls? I have NO idea if it would dampen enough, but you can get it fairly reasonable and would cover a large area.

Thanks for all the advice.

I'm already doing what mike944 said. I bought 1/2x4x8 styrofoam insulation sheets from Home Depot then glued them to the steel wall with liquid nails. I figured first step was to soften the vibration.

A stand alone wall is not going to work. Between a workbench and the sink and the roll-up door. I would be pushed out into the work bay.

I have thought of screwing 2x2 boards to the styrofoam to create a gap then adhere 4x8 sheets of 1" thick fibrglass insulation.
