Just reading the thread on new compressors and saw the idea of using a sound blanket over the unit. What are the best ways of sound insulating without overheating the unit??

Some of the higher end models have optional intake mufflers. I think that on a smaller unit you might be out of luck.

The best way that I have found is to actually box it in, a small room if you will. Insulate the room, supply fresh air to the room and if possible run the intake to the outside or even the attic if you have one. Works wonders.

My primary just sits behind this blanket, I bent a piece of concrete re-wire into shape and laid the fiberglass insul blanket over it. I should really intake it from the outside but its not bad. I like to be able to hear it a little. The blue secondary only runs occasionally and not whe I am near it so I let it be.

I drywalled & insulated the space under the stairs (leading up to the attic) and am planning on putting in a steel door to deaden the sounds a bit. Air line is dropped from the ceiling through the wall so it should be pretty quiet.

Another way is to pipe the intake outside. IF your intake is the kind that has like a 3/4-1 inch intake hole, get a little PVC and an elbow or two and pipe it right outside. THe sucking in noise of the compressor can get kidna loud. If you have an oilless compressor or a portable one, they are goign to be loud no matter what ya do.

The filter has nothing to do with it, its the actual air inlet, like the little holes where the air enters the air filters. Alot of the noise is from the air flow. The best way would be to enclose it (which might cause heat) pipe it out (which might be a PITA and look ugly), or Buy one of those 'spensive intake mufflers ($$$)
