Source for 4"x6" laminated glass

I need to replace one of the eye guard lenses on a pedestal grinder I just acquired. I've done all the basic web searching and come up dry. Does anyone know of a possible source for such a thing? McMaster-Carr wants $72 for a sheet of wired glass in this size, which seems preposterously dear, and it's not what I want.

As ever, I will be grateful for any suggestions.

check local auto glass shops, they have access to it for construction type vehicles

Look for a local glass shop. Places that make custom shower enclosures and mirrors might have something that'll work for you laying around.

I would use plexiglass, also. It would be cheaper to replace than laminated glass.

Don't use plexiglass, lexan, or any acrylic. Find your local glass shop that does auto glass. Not the typical window glass and shower enclosure type.

One that does glass for nostalgic cars or heavy equipment will have tons of scrap laminated glass. They'll probably charge you a few bucks each. Do them a favor and pay them cash. Its more labor than cost of goods.

Don't use plexiglass, lexan, or any acrylic.

The eye guards that came with my Baldor grinder/buffer are plastic, and OSHA-compatible, at least as of the year I bought the grinder.

I'm not saying that it's not approved, I just know that any acrylic will scratch, burn and mar much faster. You'll be happier with laminated safety plate glass.

not plexiglass, you want ansi-z87.1 rated polycarbonate. like safety glasses and face shields are made from.

Again, regular laminated safety plate is the simplest and cheapest.

I took my eyeshield to the local glass place and they supplied and cut the glass for me for $10.

Tinted tempered safety glass with a cert in case osha ever asked.

It's not tempered if they cut it.

they cut first, then temper it.

Had a local glass shop measure and cut safety glass ( laminated ) for two craftsman grinder shields. $6.30. Why mess with plexiglas or cutting your own?

Tinted? Your shop must be better-lit than mine.

The tint was something they had a scrap of the close to the right size, even so it is just barley tinted more like a green haze
