Source for air tank

Anyone have a good source for air tanks (no compressor, just a tank)? Looking for either a 60 or 80 gallong tank, probably vertical.

My compressor tank was origninally a boiler. My dad made it when he worked at AO Smith, it was a factory mistake I guess you would say. Had the openings on the wrong side. They let him buy it from them for cheap. Perhaps other companies that make boilers will sell you one of thier mistakes?

I think maybe he was getting at you should look at damaged, non-functioning compressors. Then just rip the dead compressor part off, and use the air tank.

If you do find a dead compressor ask the seller if they're willing to remove the motor and/or pump before shipping which should save a bit on shipping costs.

It can't hurt to ask.

I think WW Grainger still sells compressor tanks, not sure as to how large though

yes grainger sells them but keep in mind if you dont have an account or know somebody who does, you cant buy stuff from them


also, you miht be able ot order one from eaton

You can use old water heater tanks. If you want more capacity you could always hook 2 of them togeather. Used one that was fixed like that for a long time.

My Favorite place for just about anything is www.mcmaster.com its like Grainger but better. plus everything can be ordered by credit card directly off teh web. and to beat all i ussually recieve my orders in 48 hours.

did a quick search on "air tank". it came back with 5 pages of them. from a small 1 gallon up to a 240 gallon monster.

I have walked in off the street in both Kansas City MO. and Topeka KS. at grainger and made counter purchases on many occasions. I never have had any business accounts, where did you get the idea you must have a business account to buy from Grainger? Call them and check it out, what I say is true!

I just noticed the post about McMaster Carr, they are an excellent resource, they have anything tool \ hardware known to man. If you compare their prices to most everyone else you may notice they tend to run to the high side. I have always used their catalogs and their web site to research what I need, then buy it cheaper elsewhere!

With the one around here the only purchases you can make without an account are the ones from thier little store... IE cleaners, small drill bit sets, that sort of thing... you cant buy drill presses or bench grinders or 55 gallond rums of cleaner without an account.

Jim, just make an account with them. I did. Its not hard. All you need is a business card. Just print out something on the computer, just make up a business name. They don't really care either, they're just going to get more business. All they do is photocopy your business card for their records, and you fill out one form they give you. Its that easy.

Grainger seems to vary from location to location as to how strict they are. I can go in and give them the name/phone number for the company where I work, and then just say that I'll put it on my own credit card. They're OK with that. I suppose anyone could walk in and do that. It's not like they asked to see my corporate ID or anything.

Nope they only want cash! They don't care who you are! I have seen them turn people away who come in and act like it's a retail hardware store. They are set up as business to business sales only. But all you basically have to do is walk in and say something like I'm with XYZ BS company and I need part number XXXX. Don't go in there and waste a bunch of their time asking questions. Their catalogs are free but they charge them off internally @ $25.00 a copy.

Our local branch is easy to deal with. All they want are sales. They don't give a damn about ID's.
