Looking for a conical spring washer about 1/4" ID. I know I can order it from McMaster Carr but shipping gets ridiculous for 1 part and I don't need anything else at the moment. I did a google search and didn't find much local.

That’s a pretty specific part, McMaster is the best, sure you’ll pay for shipping but the part will be a quality part, not some oblong POS!

McMaster has all the drawings, Solidworks 3D models and full specifications for every part! It’s prolly THE best website ever!!

It was always a big deal to have the latest BIG YELLOW McMaster catalog on your Desk!

Cheers,
BN

Home Depot has a section in the hardware drawers with all sorts of unusual things. It would be worth a ride to take a look. Or maybe the Dorman "Help" section at the auto parts store.

Use Schnoor with serrations instead of a basic Belleville. Your VW dealer or shop might have some 8mm ones. Ace Hardware has a pretty good selection of washers. Maybe a wavy washer might work, or a split ring.

A wave washer would be less stiff and better for this I think. Have a small metal lever for the ash bucket on a wood stove that pivots on a bolt that I need a bit of tension on so it will stay partly latched for leaving it open a bit when getting it started. There is no spring of any kind so very hard to get a little friction and have it fairly consistent. Thanks for the suggestions everyone! Ace has a good selection of odd hardware but I find it impossible to find that sort of thing on their web site. They are close by though.

Ace Hardware has a pretty decent fastener aisle. I don't know if they still use Midwest, but you can find just about anything there (except riv-nuts, which apparently don't exist outside of the internet). Home Depot and Lowes don't have as much "niche" hardware in their drawer layout. Our local Ace has antique firearm hardware, of all the thing... Belleville washers shouldn't be an issue. Their website is not entirely accurate on selection.

I worked for Ace Hardware's competitor 22 years ago and I'll tell you to go to Ace instead.

I hear you on McMaster Carr. I use them a lot for work. Not the cheapest, but the selection is amazing. I also use Essentra, Misumi, MSC, Grainger, and Fastenal a lot. Fastenal has the same issue as MMC. 17 years ago I was driving a drag car down a back road, completely fresh build, maiden voyage to test it out. I went to hit the brakes approaching a red light, pedal made two loud snaps and fell. I cut the wheel and went up into shopping plaza, rolled in circles until I came to a stop. Both studs holding the MC to the firewall had snapped (brand new, mind you). I had some hand tools, pulled one stud out, walked to Fastenal. $100-something dollars later I had a bag of 250 of the dang things. They wouldn't just sell me two. XD

that is when you say you need a couple samples for a project that if it works you'll buy 10,000 if the orders come in ... .

I am familiar with that as in my previous job we made over 1,000,000/year of some products. At that volume you get good cooperation and samples from suppliers. But it was mostly electronics parts rather than mechanical.

Push nut? There is a whole slew of options at the local hardware store with those things.

How hot does the lever get during use? It might be tough to find something that takes high heat cycles over time. One advantage of the local hardware store is that once you find a fastener that sorta works, you can find a quick replacement when it fails.

It's below the firebox and gets warm but not too hot to touch. Not hot enough to remove the temper from a spring washer. It's a bolt with a clearance hole in the lever and threaded into a bracket on the door with a locknut. So adjustment is tricky. It has to be slightly loose before the locknut because the locknut tightens it a bit more. I have it adjusted pretty well but a very small amount of spring would make it move smoothly without undue fiddling.

Belleville are disc shaped lock washers that have a spring to them in the shape of a cone. Some (Schnorr) have serrations in them that bite into the metal so they lock in place better. Wavy washers are thin in and out wavy shaped lock washers. They can be ordered with a different number of waves, a different depth to the waves, and a different tension.

Looks like Lowes and Rural King have 1/4" wave washers at least according to their web sites. And probably Ace too. Will check next time I am there.
hillman, who are one of the big providers of hardware drawers for hardware stores etc, do a wave washer drawer, in metric. Goes m4 m20. The only sae sizes I see on the web are 1/4 and 1/2.
