Best / cheapest source for casters?

I want ones that swivel, have brakes, and a swivel lock. I want the brake and swivel lock independent.

Looking for about 250 to 300 lb rating, 3 to 4 inch wheel, plate mount.

HF does not have this, at least not at the store near me. Same for HD, lowes, and tractor supply company.

This place is the best that I have found.http://www.dunncasters.com/
It helps we get wholesale price but every time I go in there I go thru the bargin section
and you can find casters cheap.
usually it discontinued or ordered wrong but the quillity is way better the the box stores.
check to see if there is a store like this near to you.

What about ordering some replacement for a craftsman rolling tool chest ?

i looked into that a few years ago for an old chest i was re-painting, wasn't really worth it, i recall they wanted $40 + shipping for a pair. I ended up getting some from harbor freight and were just fine.

I have used www.reidsupply.com. Most of the stuff I have bought from them, including casters where clearance items. One other note, I had the same issue you did, needing independent swivel locks and brakes.....they are expensive. I used the HF casters and "modified" them to have brakes and swivel locks using pins. might want to consider it

Always view the weight ratings on casters VERY conservatively. Derate them by 50% even on the good ones. The HF variety are usually only good for <25% of their rating. They must derive their weight ratings by what does not physically collapse the caster just sitting still.

OK. I dunno. Our new buyer at work is a 30 year guy in the caster business and told me, while we were buying caster for a project, "no casters made in the US". We were trying to buy casters spec'd for very heavy load. All of the spec's and samples we tried were BS. Lead times for custom casters were 3 weeks. The suppliers said they had to make the parts. Our buyer dismissively said, "Yeah, 3 weeks on the boat from Shanghai". We ended up getting our engineer to draw them up and had the machine shop MAKE the casters we needed.

What's heavy load? I just got 6 casters with 8" steel/urethane wheels that will hold about 1,000 each. Maybe it was 1,400. I was looking at a few. All made in America. From Albion.

Have most of the catalogs for all the remaining caster companies. I've become a caster freak. Mainly Bassick and Albion, but some Faultess as well (though I've seen some Faultless imports too) I've also been to a plant where they are making casters and wheels in the USA. Also, I've become obsessed with the bearings used in caster wheels, and have a collection of catalogs for those (all made in USA).

As far as I can tell, the market for US casters is pretty strong right now. (At least at the high end -- but doesn't the high end always remain strong?) Production methods are pretty efficient. And for those markets where you need dependability and can't be f*cking around with cheap stuff (some aviation, some medical, some manufacturing and assembly line stuff), my understanding from reading trade journals and talking to guys in the field, is the future looks good for high end.

Again, I'm no expert, but I've bought a lot of Bassick and Albion lately and it's all been USA made.

I did find one holy grail of casters that I want to get from Germany, Blicklee [sp?].

PS. I'll pull my spec sheets, just for fun, and see what the heaviest Albion there is that I can find.

Local Farm Store here has made in USA ones for $4 each. I bought a set of 4 to build a cart to put my parts washer on. Nice to be able to move it around if I need to (sweeping, in the way, etc). Weighs about 200lbs.
