Source for hydraulic ram or actuator

I want to build a 20 to 30 ton shop press and would like to use the type of ram that you see in the images below instead of the typical bottle jack but I have not been able to find a source for them. I might be using the wrong terminology. I have been searching for hydraulic ram or actuators. Are these type of rams called something else or can someone point me to a sight that has this.

If youre set on the hand pump, try "portapower."

Having seen a few things fly out of presses in the past, I am a big fan of a LOOOOONNNNGGGG remote control. The next press I own will have a webcam for remote viewing as well.

Parker is a major mfg in the cylinder business. I have linked to a product brochure here that will help you pick the features you need and learn some of the terminology. It looks like you need a flange head mount.

Juntanengineer is right. I've seen stuff fly out. Build a cage that opens and closes around the unit when you're done. Just an idea.

I have been looking for a 4" dia flange-head mount cylinder to do that with, too.
I have a press, but it is they type with a bottle jack in it, and I'd like to convert it.

larry_g flange head mount hydraulic ram got me close but still can't find many listed. If anyone see's a press like the one I have listed I would be very grateful if you could look and see if you can find a part number or model number on the actual ram.

Let me see if I can find some options for you tomorrow at work. Part of the problem is the Parker, Eaton etc cylinders are going to be NFPA cylinders and they are all built to order so they won't be sitting on a shelf and they won't be cheap. A 30 ton press is basically a 4" bore cylinder @ 5000 psi or a 5" bore @ 3000 psi you really want to stay with the lower pressure because it gets expensive quick over 3000 psi.

That cylinder, like most, has a pressure rating of 2500psi. With a small bore, you will need more pressure.

I have tried to convert my press to the Op's idea. I have not found a good cheap setup either.

There is a shop called Fox Hydraulics http://foxhydraulics.com/

that will sell everything needed to convert a press to the portapower setup shown in the first post. There setup is all USA made and has a price that reflects that.

I have contacted Greag Smith Equipment asking them if i can buy the ram and pump off of their 20 ton press. They never got back with me. That is the problem with these foreign setups. If the hydraulics fail, it can be a nightmare getting the replacement parts.

I would also suggest checking with your local machine shops there are quite a few that will make a cylinder to whatever you need and some are both good & reasonably priced. It's just a cylinder nothing high tech and then you can go and get any small power pack that you want from a local hydraulic company.

I guess I should ask what kind of budget you have?

enerpac,powerteam, otc make cylinders that are threaded-- I have a 50 ton threaded into a plate similar to your picture.

Yes rotty suggested " surplus center". All kinds of hydraulic stuff as well as designers hardware. That's where I would look.

spec from enerpac : 3.75 bore, 3.13 piston. I use an enerpac electric pump, will go to 10,000 psi

Thanks Pete, Enerpac is owned by Parker now but was one of the first in the high pressure jacking systems and has a lot of experience doing what they do, top notch stuff.
