I am looking for a place to buy decent pressure treated 4"x4" and 6"x6" posts in the Chicago area. I am tired of dealing with the twisted and curved junk from the big box stores. Do I need to step up to kiln dried posts?

Don't waste your time looking for 4X4s. No such thing as a good one in pine.

I have several local lumber yards near me, but Lowe's and HD carrY the best quality

Don't know what your using them for but have you considered laminating three 2 bys together. Might get you a straighter piece and more treated area. Most of the barn builders around here make thier own. But for your application it may not work.

A Good Friend, who is a Builder has told me the same thing...Marry some 2x4's together.
The Treatment only goes into the wood so Far and you will have a better, longer lasting post with the 2X4's than with a 4X4.
Just Make sure the both Crown away from each other when you nail them together.

Thanks for the replies. The 4x4's will be used for a fence and the 6x6's are for
gate posts and a gazebo.

As stated above 4/4 prone to twist.

I built my fence using 6/6 but I got a good deal from a local lumber yard.

Might want to consider 4/6. Enough wood so it doesn't twist easily.

Not sure about other areas, but around me, 2X pressure treated material approved for ground contact is only available by special order. I believe all the 4X and 6x are rated for ground contact.

Can't help you on where to guy any quality stuff in your area, you're just going to have to hunt around. If and when you do find any any....keep it out of the sun and get a coat of paint/primer on it as soon you can(may have to give it some time to dry out). Good luck.

Don't know if you're north or south, but my posts came from Fox Lumber in Alsip. Kinda pricey but worth it.
