I used to get remnant rolls of paper about 3 feet wide from a friend that worked at a printing house. When the rolls would get down to a certain amount they would discard the 50-100 feet of paper on the tube. I mounted that on an old wrapping paper station where I could pull out a foot or five depending on what I was doing. Now that I've relocated, I don't have access to that any more, but loved the convienence for lining my work table when doing something messy, or drawing plans/measurements on it, masking something when painting, etc..

I just googled paper rolls and OMG is it expensive. Masking paper is even worse. Packing paper might be an option if I can find it wider.

Anyone else do this and have a suggestion?

What is expensive to you? You can get 36in or 48in rolls of white butcher type paper or brown heavy weight paper at most any sign supply warehouse or box/ carbboard selling companies for around $50-$75. Look up these sign supply companies and ask for white or brown pattern/ butcher paper, Fellars Sign Supply, Reece Supply or N. Glantz & Son.

Many smaller newspapers still don't have automatic pasting feeders. In which case, they have end rolls. I get all I can carry for free.

Nice thread! Lots of good responses.

Can those who've used the rosin paper elaborate on it's characteristics? Is it waxy? Slippery? Tough, not so much?

If you are a Costco/etc. member, they sell a LOT of toilet paper and paper towels...between each layer on the pallet-o-TP, they have a thick, brown, paper layer. I'll bet they will give you as many of those as you want, just for the asking.

$75 seems high to me, especially after getting it free for a while. :eyecrazy:

That's a great price for size, although shipping brings it up $25. $50 still might not be bad for that size. But I think I'll check the local restaurant supply houses as that might bring it down.

I'll have to check out the red rosin paper. Price seems reasonable.

Good suggestions all, I'll check them out.

I'm pretty cheap when it comes to this type of stuff, since I view it as a throw away item. Another thing I like is political signs. They are often plastic corregated board or coated paper. Excellent for table covering, placing under vehicle when changing fluids, cut them up to mock up a fabrication item in place of sheet steel.

Except that they bale their cardboard & it's worth money, so they may or may not. They bring all the goods from the ChiComs and they need material to make more boxes to send more stuff & empty cargo ships on the return trip makes for low rates.

Contacting a newspaper if they sell newsprint roll ends is a good idea.

The rosin paper is stiff and will lay flat. You can place it on a floor and walk on it without it tearing but if you drag something across it then it will tear. It is of smooth texture but not as smooth as copier paper and it is not glossy.

Check with a school supply house, not sure what they cost, but the school my wife works at has literally tons of 36" wide rolls of paper for all kinds of uses, doubt they cost too much.

I use wall lining paper both to draw on and to line the bench if I need to. You can buy different grades and the thinner stuff is dead cheap (big box stores "value" range) It's not that wide though, same width as standard wallpaper.
