Source for wheelbarrow tub replacement

Hi all, just wondering if anyone here knows of a good source for replacement wheelbarrow tubs/trays that don't cost more than a new wheelbarrow? My wife and I are seniors on a limited income so we can't just go buy a new wheelbarrow (or anything else really), so we pretty much repair everything we can. The poly tub (6cu) on our wheelbarrow is cracked in a few places and I don't think there is much chance of repairing it so I thought I would just have to splurge for a new tub, even if I had to switch to a metal tub). Then I saw the prices online for a replacement tub and they are almost as much or more than a new wheelbarrow. I found one place called "agri supply" with a decent price, but they don't ship to California. But other than that, I have been unable to find a good source anywhere locally or online. Any suggestions? All help and advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I don't know where you are (someplace in CA), that's the curse of leaving that off your avatar/screen name area, no one knows to be able to make a local reference.

In hopes this generic info helps:

Do you live in an area where they have weekly trash collections? Start driving through neighborhoods on the night before that area's bulk pickup, and sooner or later you're sure to find a cast-off you can use, take parts-from, or whatever. Just pick the whole thing up, don't try to field-strip it of what's useful to you and leave the bones in a heap where it was found.

I have probably five or six wheelbarrows I've rescued from such circumstances, needing various pieces. None has resulted in expensive outlays, all have been less than the same new piece. Fortunately, wheelbarrows are not getting Generation I, then Gen. II, then Gen III ABS, traction control, smog systems, or accident/pedestrian avoidance hardware/software, so you often can do some swapping to make one good one from several carcasses. I usually rip a PT 10 ft 2x4 to make 2x2's for the frame, and a handful of galvanized carriage bolts and fender washers, and nuts, to reassemble things into a durable, long-lasting unit. I use a quarter-round router bit to rout the handle area about 12" up from the ends, to lose the sharp edges.

At one point or another, I've brazed-up steel buckets, I've fiberglassed buckets, but I've never tried to fix a plastic bucket.

I know when I've looked online for replacement buckets I have never found one at a price I'd be willing to-pay, because I already have so-many serviceable ones, and if that one has issues, I just grab another.

If you are in a community with a dump where you have to take things, maybe hanging out there early on a Sat. morning you can scarf-up someone's cast-off. I have occasionally found units in yard sales, moving sales, neighborhood sales, church congregation sales, etc. I don't 'do' facebook, but there's that.

I have fixed plastic tubs with sheet metal and pop rivets. not pretty but it is a wheel barrow. perhaps check craigslist near you might find a freebee with a better tub or perhaps a cheap for sale one.

I need a replacement as well. But I was looking online it’s just cheaper to buy a new one which is probably what I’ll do once I can find a way to get it here since my truck is down right now.

I found mine, with metal tub, used at a garage sale for $10. Might be much cheaper than replacing.

619Dio mentioned repair, your level of handiness with metal straps, fiberglass etc might lead to an alternative.

Agree, just spend some time garage sailing and you'll find a complete wheelbarrow in no time. I'd focus on the moving sales. I see a gazillion good wheelbarrows for little money.

Before giving up, you might try heat welding the tub - you could probably use a soldering gun/iron. I've done several plastic repairs this way, one was a tub on a clothes washer, the other, the plastic bumper on my car. You can also try embedding metal mesh (screening) to beef up the repair.

Thats how I picked up another wheel barrel recently. I'm don't actively search for them but discarded wheel barrels with blown tires are just ripe for picking...LOL. Picked up a $29 solid tire from HF, replaced a few bolts, rattle can the rust spots and the wheel barrel is back on the job. It was a neat repair project and it ended up at my son's house

I had the same problem. Couldn’t find a replacement tub locally or on line. Mine was a two wheeler that I had just replaced both tubes with jeavy duty ones when the tub took a dump. Gave the whole thing away and bought a decent metal tub barrel for $50

I agree that finding a donor wheelbarrow is a good idea. I have done that myself.

Try CL or garage sales.

I lived next to a fancy neighborhood and would drive through it early on trash day, they threw out lots of good stuff.

Pay attention to houses that are for sale, many times they will put out for trash stuff they do not want to move.

City bulk trash pick up day is good.

I have noticed people clean up their yards in the springtime, so watch the trash then. And conversely, watch in the fall when they are cleaning out the yard for the winter.

I understand the income thing, but you can get a metal Truper at Farm & Fleet on sale for $55. Hard to bet you'll touch that w/ anything other than used.

I did this with my plastic wheelbarrow, its abused and seems to be holding up ok. I kinda like the plastic because I just "store" it outside and it doesn't rust, er at least the tub doesn't.

Found a working wheel barrel at the lake metal dump. All it needed was a nut to hold bucket to the frame. So if no metal dump in your area what about a scrap yard. The guys here have no problem with charging a couple of bucks for something someone dropped off for free.
The pop rivet repair sounded pretty good for a cheap fix.

Keep your eyes open for sales. There's one TSC by me, and the only deals there are on clearance lol. I feel bad for people who don't have either a Farm & Fleet or a Fleet Farm.
That’s the truth there about the clearance lol. I’m going to price some at all the different places like Rural King, TS, Ace, Lowe’s, Home Depot, Southern States, etc

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions and advice! I should have mentioned that I live in lake Elsinore CA. And I have checked craigslist before and will continue to do so. And I've driven up and down neighborhoods in the past looking for good throw-away's (got an electric mower once - used it for years). Driving around now is kind of expensive with the cost of gas, especially in California, but we do what we have to do. You folks here have been great!

do you have a menards near? try the other big box stores. they don't sell wheelbarrows complete, you buy the wheel, the hardware kit/handles, and the tub separately.

at least that's how the last two I bought were sold. you can buy just a tub, handles, wheel, or all 3.

I think the last time I looked at HD they sold both complete and parts to wheelbarrows.

not everyone can take a completely assembled wheelbarrow home in the back seat of tiny cars

And we’ve seen what happens when you attempt to take it home on the roof improperly secured to the car.

This might be your best bet. Don't know if there are any Menard's in CA though

The going rate on Facebook market place for used wheel barrows around here is $50-60
