I went over to Lincoln Hardware yesterday and bought two (made in Mexico) Nicholsons.

Then I stopped in at Tool Liquidators and wandered around a bit and found a mess of "Pferd" files in cardboard boxes that have been collecting dust there for some time. Pretty good mix of shapes and sizes.

The manager, Steve, didn't know a lot about them other than that they'd been there since Smoky sold the place years ago. We both looked at them but couldn't find a COO on the boxes. I had no clue so I left empty-handed.

So I called him this afternoon after coming home and poking around here on this site at various "file" threads, and yes, they do have the little "horse" emblem on the end of them.

So... I'll probably head down there tomorrow and pick up a few.

The prices marked on them seemed pretty steep. I used to sell Smoky "Kastar" (1989-1990), and I know he didn't give stuff away. Again, they looked like they'd accumulated a fair share of dust.

I'll be going down there with cash.

You might want to give Steve a call and see if you can make some mutually satisfactory arrangement. I told him I'd be posting something here and that he might well be getting a call.

I'll see if he'll let me do a quick inventory and post it here.

I had no idea what they were otherwise I would have picked up a half a dozen or so.

J.C. Rogerson Hardware in Hudson NY has some.. more than some... thousands... tens of thousands probably. I don't know if they'll sell them over the phone though. I know they're definitely not on the Internets. If you're ever up in that area (about 90 miles north of NYC) It's definitely worth spending a couple hours there.

Didn't Epsteins have an inventory of Old Nicholson files?

I bought a dozen from them about a year ago. All USA made, they've been great. I don't know if they still have them, but you may want to check.

Killinger:

Pferd # - description - $price - quantity -

11055 - 8" knife - $18 - 8

? - 13" half round - $23 - 3

1132 - 3-sided triangle - $13 - 2

? - 12" half-round - $23 - 6

? - 10" half-round - $13 - 12

? - 10" half-round - $14 - 10

11029 - 12" half-round - $19 - 1

19011 - 12" half-round - $12 - 2

closest I can get to accurate descriptions (several were in un-marked boxes.) things were a little mixed up, and there were some "made in India" pieces mixed in with the rest. the unit counts above are ONLY for the "Pferd" stock (with the little horse logo.) prices are marked on each piece with a felt marker.

I only picked up a few and he was willing to deal on just those. I would imagine he'll be willing to work with you on price for the entire lot. contact info is above. ball's in your court.

received today a PM from a member of another website regarding my "Pferd" find above. those of you local may find this of interest:
Good score! If you ever find yourself in Seattle its worth a side trip to University district to Hardwick's Hardware. Just off I5 by 145th. Lots of specialty files including Pferds, knife making and knife sharpening stuff. Axe equipment etc. Cool place,
(I'm sure he meant to say "45th". Hardwicks is located at 4214 Roosevelt Way NE, Seattle, WA 98105) (Google says their website "may harm your computer")

Do you have old dull files? If so, soak them in sulfuric acid for a few days and the acid will remove an even amount metal and sharpen the edges. Works well for a few times.

I'd use some of those but the price combined with shipping makes them so far out of the realistic price range for a consumable item.

I go to machine shop auctions and buy shoe boxes of them for $20. I toss the junk and keep the sharp ones.
