I want to build a 36" x ~8' desk. I have seen some really nice ones made from a door slab that got damaged on one side.

I have called around but we don't have many real building centers here in my 15min circle.

Anyone know a good way to get one? Or a good substitute for a real wood large desk.

Thanks!

I snag every one I can find from work.

They work fantastic for desks, workbenches, heavy duty shelving, even assembly tables.

Ive got 5 or 6 of them. 4 wood ones, and a few steel ones. The steel ones Im using for shop workbenches right now. They get dinged up a bit, but they clean up well, and were free!:)

Typically they are used as "cover" doors. Some stores will toss them or give them away, others will put them in close-out or sell them as b-grade.

Schools and hospitals are good sources. You gotta know somebody in those places, usually.

Try a contractor specializing in Tennant Improvement work, I sometimes see them for free on Craigs List. Property Management firms operating Office Buildings are good bet.

Find a modular home builder. Modular houses usually ship with a solid door so the fancy glass ones don't get wrecked in shipping. Then after the house is set the doors are swapped. Just a thought.
