Anyone have any suggestions on a good place to find replacement struts for holding open a tool box lid. I only have one picture at work that even comes close to showing them. This is the top of one.

Any suggestions on where to start my search?

I go tmy replacements at NAPA. Just took one of the old ones with me for the size. No problem, and a lot cheaper then the box mfg.

If that's a Snap-on box, they are covered under the warantee. Just get new one's from your dealer, or mail them in. I have gotten new shocks for free by both methods. I think any truck tool maker would warrantee these (probably Craftsman too), but I've only tried Snap-on.

Online seems to have the best prices.

You need to measure from center to center of the strut mounting points on the strut itself in fully closed position and then in fully open position (It's easier to remove the strut to do this). Those are the two lenghts (in inches) that determines what you need spec wise.

If you want to buy locally, go to any store that deals in camper, RV or truck caps as the same struts on the tool boxes are used to hold up truck cap back windows and various RV access hatches, windows, and panels.

IIRC, most are rated at that level for in 25lb, 35lbs or 45lbs. Car hood and hatch struts may be too powerful for some boxes so be forewarned.

HF sells them as replacements for their boxes in the $10ea. range. Online is $13 to $24 ea. I have found. Usually you can get two for $25 if you find the right seller.

.

If I read the picture right that is a 30lb unit. The rest of the numbers there should give the rest of the information you need.

Good catch:thumbup:
I didn't look that closely at the pic.

The few sets I have had to replace did not have that amt of comprehensive info on the strut itself.

There should be a range of 20lb to 50lb rated struts out there to choose from for any box from my findings.

Finding the correct length strut is the larger hurdle as too long and lid will not close and too short and lid will not open to full hgt for access.

The struts have failed on my Snap-On box and I'm on the hunt for more. Has anyone else warrantied these thru Snap-On? I don't have proof of purchase any longer.

P/N is 1-1969 and Snap-On wants $45 ea online. I'm sure I can find imports for less but if I can get original equipment for free that's ok with me.

edit: mine appear to be 57 lbs/ft which seems pretty high

Ign, that is the same part # I am looking for. Did you have any luck? If these are under warrantee, that will be cool, thanks.

I just replaced those same part number with some from the company listed above.

www.liftsupportsdepot.com

You can call them with your measurements and they will match it up the best available. I had to go about a 1/2" longer IIRC.

About $35-40 for a pair shipped. Is your box a KRL791 or KRA equivalent?

I think my bottom is the KR1000 and I have the matching top. I've had it so long I forgot the exact model numbers. Someday I will have to move it from it's corner and I can get the model numbers off the back.:)

Do you remember the foot pound of pressure on the ones you ordered? Or will they know what I'm looking for?

I took the measurements per the site. Mine were 49lbs. It was faster calling them with the info then looking thru their site. Fast shipping and good service.

You will have to find the foot pound that you want. They have a wide range. I went with a 55lbs one because they didnt have 49.

I haven't done a damn thing but really need to. It's annoying having my lid falling down on my stuff up top all the time. I have not asked about warranty, I feel kinda bad like I'm expecting something for nothing.

86k10 seems to have great info, I'll probably go that route.

bumping this old thread to see if anything came of it going through Snap On. I have an older KRA top and bottom and my struts have been dead a couple years. I usually just have my hood prop tool up there to hold it open so it doesnt slam shut on me. I was thinking about this the other day again and I thought that hood struts would be too strong but I may be wrong. Guy at advanced auto said they could match something up but he also said to try snap on as he had a buddy who got a pair warrantied. I guess I'll try to call them up. I still need to get with them about my old soft face and deab blow hammers that have pretty much disintegrated.

Honestly, you could try some of the struts from the 2nd gen eclipse/talon hatchbacks... I've got through multiple sets from various cars, and NONE of them can support the hatch; they can't be too strong. At this point I just keep a set of locking pliers in the car..

Ok so I STILL had done nothing but think about it around once a month. "I should take care of that" and then I get side-tracked.

This resurrection prompted me to just call Snap-On today and ask - the most they can say is no. I called 877-762-7664 and jumped thru a few automated selections. I got a nice guy named Jeff who first wanted my box number but its kinda a PITA to roll it away from the wall so I asked if 1-1969 helped him. He looked them up and said yeah, LT warranty. Took my address and is supposed to be shipping out a new pair.

If anyone else calls today & gets a Jeff tell him we're not scamming him, just on an Internet forum where a discussion prompted us to get off our collective asses!!

Call about the struts and hammers. They are good to deal with on the phone. I told them I was retired and didn't have a dealer.

lol, I got mine warrantied too last month along with my hammers. The new ones almost seem too strong, if I let go of the lid it slams itself open. But my lid ain't falling on me anymore and I also got two new red handled hammers (a 40oz deablow and 16oz soft face) to replace my old crumbling orange handled hammers. Everything under warranty.

I did buy two ratchet rebuild kits and a drawer lock because one of mine was missing (the plastic push lock thingy). Lady was going to warranty the rebuild kits but I told her, honestly the ratchets are fine I just want to upgrade my old 720 and 730 to the 30 tooth heads. I guess they were kinda loose and sloppy compared to now, but they werent missing any teeth or anything. Im in a very good place with snap on right now! lol

Yeah I NEVER close my lid. Next time I'm just gonna make some solid spacers or just clamp the failed ones with a set screw keeper, kinda like hood strut locks.

I really need to contact SO about the struts on my 4114. They hold when it's all the way open but it's a finger smasher if you aren't careful.

Another resurrection here, but with some useful information. My box is also equipped with the 1-1969 struts, it's a KRL1201. I was too honest when asked "How did you acquire this box?" I told them I bought it used from the Snap on truck. That was met with, "I'm sorry but the warranties are only good for the original purchaser. You will have to pay for the supports and they are $50 each. Would you like to order those today?" No thank you!

This looks to be the aftermaket version of the ones you need.

I have bought on line and at Napa.

If you are not sure of what lb to get and one strut is still decent, you can set your bathroom scale on the bench, and collapse the strut slowly on the scale. The scale will read how many lbs of force you are exerting on the strut. Add some lbs to what you read and you will be close.

I am a tech and owns a shop and have had to deal with this a few times over the years. I've always just gone to Napa and found a competent parts counter member to help and they usually get it right. This last time, the number updated, but Napa has these struts in a 40# or 60#, their part # is. 819-5519 for around $20 ea. Bought one for my Craftsman 3 drawer Utility Cart lid (it has 2 struts on it total, but only 1 failed) and it worjed beautifully!!! Hope this helps someone!!

That would just be 27 lbs. It is not a torque measuremrment, only the weight the strut can hold up.
