I spent a couple of hours today going to Sears, Menards, etc. looking for one or two upright storage cabinets for the garage. While the Gladiator stuff impressed me with it's construction and the Craftsman cabinets with the storage in the door are pretty cool...the standard metal office cabinets seem to be better made from heavier gauge material, larger and just better all around to me. Anyone got ideas as to sources for used office cabinets?

Take a look at a couple of these to see what I mean...18' or 24" deep, taller, wider...paint 'em black and put some casters on 'em and they would suit my needs perfectly...I stopped by the only local office supply place (a friend of mine's business)..he told me any used one that comes in goes straigh to his garage :(

(I may just order a couple of these new and put casters on them)

Probably your best bet is to look through the classifieds of the local paper. Here in KC there are a few places that sell exclusively used office equipment and fixtures. Its a pretty big buisness apparently. Also watch for buisnesses going out of buisness or auctions with buisness properties. At auction that stuff sells for next to nothing. Your right about them being good heavy grade cabinets though.. all that knoll and herman miller office furniture is overbuilt and designed to be abused.

Where are you at? I have four cabinets - two large double door ones with shelves and two smaller single door with shelves - that I picked up from my office when they were redecorating. Might be willing to part with one of each. Definitely need some cleaning up and paint, but would work well.

alot of them here in chicago go to salvage yards to be scrapped out ,I went to cozzi in chicago (22nd st and halstead) and got some nice file cabinets( steelcase I believe) for there price in weight ( 20 bucks ) got new locks , blasted them and repainted them with automotive paint , they look like new (except they are bahama blue) and when I got rid of the storage garage I was renting I got 100 bucks each for them . ussually if you see a large drop dumpster at a building you will find them there ( go inside and ask if they will sell them first . )

If you have anything like a Habitat for Humanity store keep an eye out. I just scored a wall-mount Steelcase cabinet for $15. A little scratched and some tiny dents, but for the shop I don't care.
