South Bend 14" Floor Drill Press Model 14F3A questions

background: i never need a tool like this. i noticed it dropped off at my town's metal scrap pile. i do know that that top belt covers to drill presses are often broken/missing, so i took the time to remove it for possible sale. i also took tome pics to research the item. discovered them listed for big $$ on ebay, and well regarded elsewhere, so went back to see if i could grab it. in that short anmount of time, the dump gorilla had decided it was a hazard standing upright, and tipped it over. there was a partial break to the front belt cover, and some minor chips on the front pulley! anyway, i hauled it home.

power works, lightbulb shines. motor hums, but apparently there is a missing item (capacitor?) on the motor rear side. so, pulleys won't engage.

what to do? i don't mind parting it out if that is best economically. i could try listing it as a whole as well, but often parts are greater than whole. i could restore it, but not sure that is the best avenue.

any info regarding this item will be helpful min my decision making. no plans on scrapping it.

I would put it on marketplace/craigslist as is and see if it sells. Parting it out on eBay would probably make the most money but eBay get $15% now I think and you will probably have to ship to get top dollar. So may end up making the same or less than if you sold it as a complete unit. I seriously doubt any of those high dollar restored ones will see 1/2 of what they are asking

need to consider options, do more research. glad i salvaged it before it was more damaged. lot of fans out there for this brand who may desire hard to locate parts.

no timeline. if i go that route, i will have to research sales and value, and decide how to break it down and market. ebay is the only place i know of that has a history of completed sales, so i would start there. i could do FBM, but it doesn't really have the national scale ebay does.

got it disassembled, except the base, which will need some soaking (did remove the set screw). went well.

The motor is a plain-jane westinghouse, not worth anything.
Shame that the guard was broken.

The platform is a (tilting) drill press table.

so, as a data point, i did sell the adjustable table for about $200. hopeful other parts can be sold to help others with their drill projects. wondering if it worth it to advertise the cast base and/or steel post?

i don't think so. and best offer. was i "optimistic" for the table to sell for 220 shipped? i've sold many things over time that many have scoffed at my asking prices, and yet they sell for a healthy price. i usually only have one of them, and don't mind waiting. i'll update the forum when the next piece finds a new home! appreciate the assistance in helping undertstand this item so i can help others who need these parts.

trying to separate the pole from the base. anyone know of it is threaded or fitted? it does have a set screw.

It is not threaded. There are several posts in the forums showing different methods of separating the column from the base.
Methods include penetrants soaking for days, heat, and wood blocks to drive out the column.

The quill inside of that South Bend drill head has a Morse Taper #2 spindle holding the chuck.

this item is a great example. the person who bought the table through ebay was interested in the cover. they offered $200. not a bad offer. i countered with $250. they passed. a few weeks later, someone valued it at $500. it could have sat there for a year. never know. and it was best offer.

don't underestimate the value of your items, or yourself.

IME tables, table lifts, belt covers are generally in pretty high demand. Head castings are generally not and they're expensive to ship.

If that head body doesn't sell, I'd break it down into the higher demand/easier to ship components like feed handle, quill assembly, recoil spring, pulleys, depth gauge, hardware, switches and nameplates. With a little cleanup just those three nameplates could bring $100+ and cheap to ship. That front one is really cool.
