South Bend 7" Shaper - Need Motor

Hello, I am working on a South Bend 7" Shaper. The motor is a TORQ 1/3 HP 1725 RPM 5 amp Frame 146. I cant seam to find any info on the motor. It did work for about 5 mins and then flipped the breaker. I took it apart and I don't see any damage. The bearings seem ok. I either need to get this motor repaired or replace it. Cant seem to find a Frame 146 motor. Attached is a pic of the tag.

Any suggestions?

Frame data has been updated since that one was manufactured, and a plain 146 is no longer listed. You'll have to do some measuring and maybe some adapter plate work to replace it. Worth your time to find a motor shop, and to get on one of the South Bed forums for some better help.

TORQ is still in business...

The motor on my 30 y.o. table saw died a couple years ago, and I found out it was pretty much the same money, to buy a new motor or have the local shop rebuild the old one. So I had the old one rebuilt. That way it would ensure absolutely no issues when reinstalling and it supported the local economy. Motor size was 1.5 hp, the economics may not balance out for a 1/3 hp.

The fact that it ran for 5 minutes and flipped the breaker suggests it could be the centrifical switch that failed to disengage the start windings. The other likely possibility is that it never came up to full speed which creates motor slip which leads to excessive amp draw.

All these split phase induction motors are pretty simple to diagnose and the good news it that burnt out/shorted windings are not the most common problem based on my experience.

Here's what I would do:

1. Make sure it's wired correctly.
2. Check the starting circuit. This includes centrifical switch or relay, capacitor(s), etc
3. Double check the bearings. They will need to be replaced or serviced on a motor this old.
4. Make sure the rotor is aligned properly with the stator. (ie consistent air gap all the way around the stator.)
5. Ohm out the start, run windings and make sure there's no leakage to the motor's case. Run windings usually measure single digits and start windings are usually low teens but it depends on the motor.

That a pretty impressive motor. 1/3 HP but 5 amps!! (sounds like they underrated the HP).

If the windings are shot you'll likely need to fabricate a template to adapt a modern Nema 56 motor to a 146 mount.
