South Bend shaper restore.

Well guys it been about a year since I picked up this shaper and finally making some progress. Now this has been a very interesting rebuild for me at least. Found a few broken pasts nothing series but did have to make a few parts for her. This shaper is a 1965 model and has a oil pump for all the moving parts ram, gears and such. The oil pump has what is called a relive valve that for some reason was all chewed up by the oil pump lever not sure how that happened but any way got that fixed. and the other part I had to make wasn't broke but missing it was the handle for the vice the former owner just stuck a 15" rod in there . Now when I bought this shaper it had no base for it I was going to fab something up but I found an original stand for it here is the story on how that came about. I was on another site posting about my shaper find and A fellow member that goes by the name latheman told me he had a stand for it if I was interested it boy was I. The problem was that the stand was in south bend Indiana and I live in Arkansas and shipping would be well lets say more than I paid for the shaper so that was out. About a month went by and I get a email form latheman to give him a call. I did and what he told me was that he had a guy that was coming to buy some stuff from him that lives in Alabama and would bring the base back with him well it would be closer so I give this guy a call and this is where it gets cool he said that he would have no problem picking the base up for me and that in about two months he and his family were coming to Arkansas for a wedding and would bring it with him how cool is that. Still have some more to Finnish up before I can start making some chips but we are getting close. enjoy the pics.

SBLatheman / Ted is a great guy.. He's an old South Bend Lathe Employee, who eventually was the plant manager and was around when they closed both the Sample Street and Bendix Avenue factories and ended up with a lot of tooling and etc. He also purchased the local South Bend Lathe dealer inventory there in South Bend, and is always helping South Bend nuts find parts for their machines.. Being from South Bend myself, Ted does us Benders proud...

I've got one of these machines too, and had to replace the ram/overarm because the oil pump stopped lubricating the dovetails and it roached out. I purchased new parts way back when (~15 years ago) from Plaza Machine / Joe, another great guy helping folks like us resurrect old USA iron to working condition.

I cannot wait to see the pictures..

Those are neat. I've always wanted a small bench top shaper to thinker with I guess. Not sure how much I would use it though. Used to have a large Cincinnati tool room shaper and that thing was very useful. Went when the CNC mill came though.

Makes things flat. You can cut keyways and other things on it too but the top just slides in/out a few inches with the tool post in the end of it chopping the top flat of whatever you have attached to the table below.

Since it is a single point tool, it is relatively slow vs vertical or horizontal milling especially with the high speeds and feeds available with today's carbide tools.. I made a sheet metal working hammer back in the 8th grade, I'll post a picture of it later. I also used it early on in shaping the
'cut out' of a V Block I made in vocational machine trades in high school; before we were allowed to run the vertical or horizontal mills...

Here are a couple of shop projects from many moons ago.. The taper on the hammer was a shaper project, one was cut length wise and the other across the length, to get us to appreciate how the machine can be set up for different purposes. The v-block, we were required to "square up" the working block, and shaper the one end of the block into an L, getting us to learn how to use the down feed function. I've done other projects similar to this including making of vise jaws (setting up a v tool to cut perfectly spaced v notches was a snap), and some replacement jaws for an old wooden style clamp my dad had that was missing one side of the jaw.

Nicely done Dennis. I have a question for you sir on my shaper the motor pulley is some kind of messed up lol. wobbles real bad so I am going to replace it. My question is do you happen to know the size of pulley on your motor ? the reason I ask mine is most likely not original. Thanks for any help.

Hi Brian,

The pulley is a 4 step with major ODs of 2.000, 2.625, 3.375, and 4.000 inch increments. Its the same size pulley on the drive end of the shaper main drive (i.e. matched set).

The SBL pn for both pulleys is AS5010S1. Have you tried Ted / SB Latheman to see if he has any? SBL also has a "How to Run a Metal Working Shaper" booklet, I'll have to dig it out to see what else might be referenced there.

Well guys another one all done. and to celebrate I made some chips. I have been waiting to get this finished up for my lathe. they are turn buckles for the counter shaft a copy of the originals.
