Well, the time has finally come to start my build thread. Cannot believe this is finally coming together. I have put it off for so long and Covid really slowed the project down but finally getting it done now.

Started to do a 30'x40'x11' a few years ago but never made the commitment with the contractor because the price then seemed way too high but finally got a well recommended local guy to get this project rolling for a reasonable price and here we go!

Welded 40'x50'x14' shop: $32,960 total for material and labor
3/12 roof
40 year color roof and siding
12'x12' doors (2)
10'x10' door (1)
8'x10' door (1)
3'x7' walkthrough doors (3)

Bat vinyl insulated walls and ceiling: $5,190 (installed)

Colored gutters and downspouts: $1,320 (installed)

Concrete Slab: $15,500
40’ 3” x 50’ 3”
24” perimeter beams
18” interior beams
5” slab thickness
3500 psi concrete
5/8” rebar in beams
3/8” rebar for mat 12” centers
6 mil plastic under slab

3' Stucco wainscoting: $3,800

Total Project: $58,770 (without electrical)

I decided to use roll up doors and just deal with some of the energy inefficiency. I prefer all the overhead space open for lighting and utilization of space. I did run electrical races and some cold water plumbing in the slab. Unfortunately could not get around to placing any drainage before concrete was poured.

Regardless I am ecstatic to be moving forward and will update this thread throughout the process.

Slab time baby! I work as a hospitalist and been working 29 days straight. Had two days off and spent those fishing and then church. I ran electrical and plumbing by the light of my truck and a work light from 11pm until 3am, lol. Went with 1" electrical conduit to all sections so nothing has to be run overhead or around beams. Decided last minute to run some PEX for water hoses to all sides except one.

I'll let cure for about 7 days then I will remove the plastic and should be welding up metal beams and framework in 2-3 weeks.

No lift plans as of now. I don’t think I would get enough use out of it to justify the loss of floor space and limited flexibility a stationary lift would require.

Had some awesome progress and everything is working it really well so far. Most of the framing is welded in place and they will work on the rest of the purlins this weekend.

Decided to go with a 20’x25’ loft and did some 3D renders to convince the wife of the $7500 upgrade. Boss approved so that got added to the bill:

Walls and insulation going up. Should be done by Friday with walls, roof, trim and gutters. Loft beams are in and mounted. Doors are ordered but will take a while to get in. Looking good so far!

Flying together now! All that’s left is half the roof and trim work for the sheet metal! Hoping to have doors hung in 2 weeks or less. I’ll be working on electrical this week.

All finished up and insulated! I’m super impressed and the crew did a fantastic job. I’m gonna do a more thorough inspection this weekend but everything I’ve seen looks awesome and really clean.

I went through about 10 different contractors to find the guy/crew I’m working with and probably got 15-20 different concrete quotes. The guy I ended up using had two excellent personal references and I went and looked at one of his buildings in person and really liked the way it turned out. Very glad I spent the time before I signed a contract because one guy I was considering isn’t even in business anymore and he wanted half up front. That would have sucked!

Got a great deal on some industrial stairs to get to the loft $475 each. Gonna put one up along the wall and just have to duck below the beam. The second one is actually for the builder for his shop loft.

Rolling along nicely and time for an update!

Mezzanine loft is all installed and decked, stairs are welded in place and are sooo nice! Electrical is coming along and have plenty of plugs and I think 6 overhead UFO led lights should be adequate for overhead lighting. I’m going to go with a bunch of Lee lighting under the loft since that’ll be my primary work space.

Once electrical is done I plan on doing 3/4” plywood from the ~4’ to the ~8’ purlins and keeping the bottom open. That’ll give me plenty to attach my garage and workshop cabinets.

Got the trailer out of the way for a better look at the space under the loft. I’m going to use the space as my primary workshop/tool storage area. Ran plenty of outlets, lol.

I have one circuit run to the center of the main ceiling for a big fan or additional lights. I have a switched junction box under the loft for running additional lighting. I haven't figured out what lights to use under there yet.

You may need a little more bracing on each corner. But other wise it looks good.

Electrical is all done and lighting inside and out is all finished up. Driveway and the rest of the concrete work should get poured over the next two weeks.

That's a lot of space to cool and if you're not on the gulf, the humidity has to be brutal!

I haven't committed to air conditioning the shop yet. If I did anything it would likely be two mini splits.

As for other toys I have a boat that needs to come back home from the storage unit!

Now the layout dilemma! I’m hoping this doesn’t take too many revisions, lol. I’m thinking I’ll setup all the cabinets along the back wall and rolling tools and hanging tools will be on the side wall. Now to move about 3000 things over from the garage.

There is exactly 96” between the large cabinets so I’m going to get a husky 96”x24” adjustable height work bench to fill the space and then thinking I’ll put some rolling drawers on either side underneath the workbench. The Gladiator stuff has gotten even more expensive than it was when I purchased this setup years ago so looking at any brand that is similar in style or quality.

The gap on the far end is for my standalone sink.

Well, I found a great deal on Facebook marketplace on exactly the Gladiator 8’ workbench I wanted and a couple more rolling cabinets so grab those as well as a new to me Kobalt belt driven compressor so those have been added to the damage…

Country came and set the culvert and fill dirt/sand for the drive way arrived yesterday as well so hopefully we are proceeding with that soon!

In addition to the nice mezz, you have the exact same gladiator cabinets as me. I've not seen many on here with the large 4'x6' cabinets and I'm assuming the hangers are 30"? I have 2 or the large uprights and 4 of the 30" hanging cabinets.

I don't have the two on wheels but I'm building a steevo bench and using my gladiator 40" tool chests. Now those, I'm the only one I've seen with them, as far as I know.

Gladiator aside, the shop is looking great. I'll be following along.

Yes, these cabinets have been with me for a while. I got them back in the glory days of the Sears points specials and I think the price was $100 per box and I got aout $20 in Sears points which I used to buy a ridiculous amount of hanging hooks and accessories, lol. Actually now I wish I would have bought a few more cabinets and storage racks. Had no idea they would become so expensive and hard to find.

I've only assembled the 4x6 cabinets but they are great, nice and sturdy and hold a ton of stuff. Glad to hear you've had yours for a while and still like them. We have a few gladiator guys on here!

And now the transfer of stuff from the garage to the shop really taking place. Still waiting on driveway to be poured because of the wet weather we had last week.






Got a bunch of these
on clearance from Home Depot. Normally $269 got 6 of them for $109 each.


Slowly coming along getting everything organized and weeding through all the old **** I’ve held on to.


Addsome foam pipe insulation to cover the bottom row of screws so I can try running a robotic vacuum to keep everything clean as much as possible. Really going through and cleaning everything up as much as possible which is taking a lot of time but will be worth it after all the work is done!

That's a helluva nice piece of work so far. Looks like it could stand up to a Texas twister, for sure! What is the model number and make of those strip lights under the mezzanine? I'm just finishing up the mezzanine in my shop and I really like the looks of those!
