I bought a small lathe today and was wondering if anybody has a factory paint code for south bend. The plan is to break it down and paint this winter.

Nice machine. I have a 32 8", and am picking up a Heavy 10 (an it is HEAVY) this week. You will love this machine.

As far as paint, its not like restoring a snap on toolbox, exact paint color doesnt affect the machines value. The value of a small southbend is 99.999 percent in the condition of the ways and head stock bearings. Im sure the color changed a little over the years too that the 9" was made. Just get a good medium grey enamel, and you will be just fine.

Again, most important is the condition of the ways a bearings, and the ability for the machine to function accurately. A SB9 with excellent or professionally re-scrapped ways and good headstock bearings and a fair accompaniment of tooling will be worth a lot, regardless of paint. A worn out machine, incapable of producing accurate work, but perfect paint will be worth very little.
