I went and had a first look at a Southbend lathe today. Not a lot of tooling with it. 3 and 4 jaw chucks. Several lantern tool holders and bits. The motor had slowed and started to smoke. So it was taken out of service. He wants 600.00 dollars. What do you guys think? 1 1/2 hp 3 phase motor.

If the rest of the lathe is in good shape, the motor is not that hard to source and replace

If the bed is in decent shape I'd take it for $600. If you decide to pass I may be interested depending on where and shipping costs.

Tooling ***** to acquire separately, IMO. I went after a SB like that at an auction last year and it went past the nearly $2k I bid, but that one was LOADED and in great shape.

I'd probably offer $300-400 with them loading it on my trailer.

$600 is not a bad price if it includes what looks to be a VFD attached to it. You may get lucky and find the VFD has failed. good luck

I suspect that since you are in the NW, lathes are not too plentiful. Regardless, as others have already said, if the rest of the lathe is in decent condition, then $600 is a decent price even without tooling. Literally thousands of these SB lathes were built and used tooling should be readily available from eBay if you can take the time to watch for it. If you want a lathe I'd go for it.

Used 3-phase motors are pretty cheap and usually readily available. I don't see a VFD, but maybe I'm missing it.

I don't think it has a VFD, there is a motor starter, E-Stop and drum switch on the pedestal. It looks like a 13" they are much more capable than a 10" IMHO. A replacement motor 2HP three phase WITH a VFD shouldn't cost more than a few hundred bucks.

In looking at the picture there also appears to be a Jacobs collet chuck on the far end of the drip tray, the aluminum handwheel. It is an older machine with the early style gear box. Offer 500.00?
