Just went to Luky's for first time in ages and it's different since they changed the name from Joe Factor.

I have to say you pretty much now only want to go there if you need fasteners, a certain type of hose clamp or hydraulic parts but they have the best selection and very well organized fasteners

I also went to M&M fasteners, Best West fasteners in SF Valley which are two big outfits that just sell fasteners and neither had the selection that Luky's did.

You would be well served to go to Luky's to find that Gucci bolt you've been wanting.

Sadly Apex in Sun Valley is fading and very tired, interesting to check out but 80% of the inventory is hard to find/access or just not needed. It's like going to someones place who is a serious hoarder for the last 40 yrs but doesn't know how to clean or organize there junk. It's sad because the concept is great but they just don't seem to care. They do have good deals on nice DC fractional hp motors, lots to choose from and If you want a certain type of copper wire, they literally have millions of feet of it.

This Saturday will be a new swap meet for vintage tools. I was told it will be held quarterly and located in the parking lot at Rockler Wood Shop & Tools.

https://losangeles.craigslist.org/lac/gms/6032492440.html

Thought this maybe a good thread to post this link and hopefully resurrect it. It's not exactly a store but it be will held at the same place quarterly and they also do a tool swap meet in Culver City quarterly at Anderson Plywood.

I go to the one in Culver City when they have it and I've scored some of my favorite tools there.

Me and my wife drove to Pasadena to the tool sale at Rockler. There was a lot of good stuff some of it was over priced. I bought a couple of things. A Lufkin yard stick and a Klein crimper. Then we went over to Northridge to Mr Stuff. We bought a few things there as well. Lots of stuff to look through there.

I went as well and thought there were some really good prices if you compared them to ebay sold prices but there were also a lot of the pieces that were pricey because they were collectable or hard to find and in demand tools. Most of the tools were vintage in really good shape, cleaned up and fully working; you have to pay more for that.

I did get a complete Whitney No.5 punch set for $30, a clean Starrett/Mitutoyo 3 piece combo square for $40, some old new stock Swedish made files ($7), and a swiss made 1" Etalon micrometer in perfect shape, carbide tipped for $20 (measured perfectly when I got home and tested it with my Starrett-Webber gage blocks, within .0001"). I can't complain and pretty happy. Oh and a really cool 10lb anvil.

If you were looking for regular garage/shop non-collectable hardware tools that you're willing clean up yourself then the vintage tool swap meet is not the spot. The regular swap meets and garage sales are much better for that like the High Performance Swap Meet in Long beach on Sundays. I went to it today and saw a ton of random tools in piles but nothing nearly as nice as the Old Tool Swap meet. Pomona swap meet is also another good one for mechanic tools.

I too thought some of the prices of some of the tools I really wanted were expensive at the Pasadena show but then I looked on eBay and saw even much higher sold prices for the same items. Made me wish I could go back go back to Pasadena and get them. The next vintage tool swap meet will be in Culver City on May 20th at Anderson Plywood.

If anyone knows of a shop in LA area for used pallet racking (or related material handling gear), I'd love to hear about it. Thanks.

I bought a truck load of boltless shelving a few years, ok a decade, back and learned that there was a dozen brands that didn't interchange parts and what I had was a mixed lot extra bits. I bought from these two places;

In Riverside just off the 91@VanBuren.

Water Heater Depot 3300 Call Dr Riverside, CA 92503

This place buys returned, overstock and scratch and dent stuff from Big box stores by the truckload. They lay it out on pallets and folding tables yard sale style and resell at aprox 50% of MSRP. They always seem to have stuff from Home depot and Walmart but there is always a mix of other stuff too. I've even seen pallets of overstocked books from amazon. Don't buy anything without testing it first... they will accept returns for 30 days with receipt but they will only give you store credit back. they have outlets available for you to plug stuff in and test.

Also in Riverside off the 60 at Main.

Electronics Warehouse 2691 Main St. Riverside 92501 951-686-6186

This is an old-school electronics shop, Like the pre 1980's version of RadioShack on Steroids. They have a great inventory of all kinds of electronic components, cables and tools, at reasonable prices, and everyone that answers the phone is helpful and knows what they are talking about. They have a separate building next door that is stocked with used electronic components as well.

Thanks. That's great. Those two places aren't too far away. They look like they might have some good stuff. What kind of prices did you pay, approx., if you don't mind me asking?

Yes, I've noticed all the different makers (and designs -- some of them proprietary??) out there. I like the tear-drop style. (Though there might be a couple of different ones that are of the "tear-drop" type as well!)

I've seen info-graphics on the web that list the dozens of different types. For those searching these things out (and for those not familiar with all the types of fastening) it might be worth seeking out a graphic of the different types for reference.

I've picked up some shelving from these guys over the past 30 years:

And it's held up (I always get the extra support braces along the depth of the shelving). I wasn't so happy with the rolling shelving (with casters) I got from them. Most of the time, we've made our own. But I needed one quick, and tried it. The underlying frame wasn't straight and one ours had sloppy welds, and the caster rigs didn't square up. We fixed it, but I'd rather have it work outta the box. I imagine it was just bad QC and luck of the draw as everything else I've gotten has been good.

I had considered getting the new pallet racking from them -- the price looked good, but thought so much of this stuff is on the used market and it's probably really good quality compared to what the new stuff of equivalent quality costs, that I've been meaning to check out.

I had checked CL used ads, but most of the locations that the ads refer to are pretty far from our area (Long Beach/Port of LA) that I just haven't been able to make time for a 1/2-3/4 of a day trip.

I thought I'd try one row out -- and like the ones that are 40-48" deep, and 96-108" long and about 108" tall.

Here was something else I saw from web. I had no idea that the pallet racking had this many little trick sets ups for barrels, reels, and the like.

I got it from here:

http://www.americansurplus.com/used_equipment/9/pallet_racking/30/pallet_rack

Unfortunately, they are in Providence. But the website is useful and informative. If I were buying in bulk (say to cover an entire large warehouse) used, it might actually be worth paying the freight to get it across the country, but not for just one row of 100-200' worth. Still, if you live near Providence, this looks like a hell of a place with a hell of a selection.

I'd be happy to tell you the prices I paid, but it varied from dirt cheap up to close to new when I needed ONE item of a specific type to finish a rack. Also I never bought "real" pallet racks, just boltless package shelving, much lower rated 400 or so lbs per shelf.

I used to visit Electronics warehouse in Riverside all the time, but not in ages. It used to be full of OLD surplus from the tube era, with a blend of current technician stuff like solder and meters.
