Started the build of our shed about a month ago. Everything is moving along and I’m getting more and more excited every day! Dimensions are 48’x 80’ with 15’ walls on top of 12” tall concrete. Slab is 6” thick, walk doors are all 36” doors, windows are all 48”x48”, large overhead door is a 20’ wide by 14’ tall and small overhead door is a 10’x10’. Immediate plans for the shed are to get the outer shell on, insulated doors installed with high lift openers, ceiling installed and put the lighting in. We are building a house immediately after the shed is up so the focus will be shifted momentarily from the shed to the house. Once the house is built i plan on insulating the entire building and finish the walls with metal. There is a bathroom roughed in with a small utility room for water heater and air compressor that will most likely be finished as we are building the house. All wiring except in the bathroom and kitchen area will be in metal conduit surface mounted to the walls. There will be absolutely nothing in the walls except wood and insulation when complete.

Great building. What are you filling it up with?

Thanks a lot! We have a 5th wheel camper, boat, side by side and I have a few older tractors i like to waste time and money on. Planning on being able to store all of that and still have room to work on something without having to move stuff out of the way.

Bigwhite11,

Growing up on a farm in southwestern Indiana (about 5 miles south of Vincennes) I had to chuckle a bit at your "shed" reference.

Growing up the 3 types of buildings on the farm were generally House, Barn & Shed. Didn't matter how big it was, if it wasn't a House or a Barn it was a Shed. Perhaps your experience is similar.

When I went to the Peachtree City, GA Building Department 5 years ago to see if I would be able to build my proposed 46x60 building close to my house, I was greeted with, "What can we do for you?.

I answered, "I'd like to build a shed."

They responded, "Don't call it a shed."

Apparently in Peachtree City, a shed is a specific type of structure - very small for tool storage or a lawnmower - and the City Fathers have particular limitations on "sheds". HA!

Yours is a very handsome shed! Thanks for sharing your project.

Best regards,

Scott

That’s funny! I’m from about 2 hours west of Vincennes. I actually worked in Olney for a while a few years ago. Yes, a shed around here is anything except a house or barn. LOL thank you very much for the compliment!

Have made a little progress. All of the exterior metal is up i just haven’t been home to take pictures of it yet. The overhead doors are going in this week or next and the ceiling is going in as well. I pulled all the wire for the 14 ufo lights I’ll be putting in as well as the 6 recessed lights for the loft above the kitchen/ bathroom area and the sub panel for the air compressor, water heater and circuits for the kitchen/ bathroom. Do you guys have any recommendations for a sealer for the floor before i start parking everything on it?

Started hanging the lights. I have 14 150w ufo lights and 6 flush mount 60w lights (in loft area). I ended up going with some valspar wet look concrete sealer. It’s what the local lumber yard stocks. It was supposed to take 10 gal to do the floor but i feel like I’m putting it on fairly heavy and haven’t even used 6 gallon and I’m 90% done with the floor. I might try and get another coat on before we start backing the toys in.

Done for now. Gonna have the electrical contractor put the panels in when they set the meter on the shop wall and run temporary power for the house. Hopefully going to start digging the basement in a couple weeks.

Looks very nice... can you elaborate on "digging th basement" for this project?

We’re building a house next. We chose to build the shop first so we would have a place to stage material and finally get all of our stuff in one place. We’ve needed a “garage” like this for some time.

Small world . My family is from the Sumner/ Bridgeport area. I went to junior high school there in 1978-80. Still have cousins in Olney and Vincennes. Was supposed to go back this year but the virus messed that up. What area are you building in ? That is a nice shop. Looking forward to following your build.

So far it is a really nice product. It went on really easily with a roller and i can’t tell at all where i started a section, let it dry then started again. It took us 2 days get it all done. It’s not going to hold up like and epoxy would and i understand that, but i wanted to get some sort of sealer down before i filled it up.

I weld a lot and will be working on tractors in this shop so i didn’t want to put an expensive product down knowing i will be destroying it in the future.

It is dangerously slick when wet. I knew this going in though. I told my concrete guys to make it as slick and flat as possible because i want to be able to push a 4’ push broom across it with 2 fingers. Lol

Thanks a lot! I’m building just south of Carlyle Illinois. I used to work over in olney. I’m a pipeline welder but worked for Illinois gas co for a short while.

It has been a while, but the “garage” is still a work in progress.

Just got some new garden hoses. The wheels came off of my welding rig. They were replaced under warranty and the dealership let me keep them. I’ve had them sitting in the back of the building for a while. Finally got them put up and out of the way.
