This site looks like a wealth of information and hopefully I can avoid some mistakes with my next shop. Thanks in advance for the advise.

I currently have a 28 X 60 stick built shop. It's got three courses of 8" block and 8' studs on top. I made some mistakes and did some things right so I plan to adjust accordingly for the next shop.

I'm planning on a new shop at our soon to be retirement home. My question is the advantages and disadvantages of stick built / pole barn / metal building. Planning on a ~ 30 X 80. A portion of the shop can be simply dried in with lights and electrical for storage of the toys. For the remainder I'd like to have it so I can tinker during hot & cold weather. I'd also like a "crash" area with facilities for fixing a meal and such.

When I ask the contractors each responds as you would expect based on the type of building they sell. Whats the straight poop?

My shop I stick built with a ,metal roof, The main reason for that is because that is what I am comfortable building myself, IE I did all the construction from slab to soffits.

From your post I would assume that you are having your built, so it really comes down to what you prefer as far a the look of the building.

Each has some advantages over the others.

I'm in NoVA, and I have to agree with the pole barn as the least expensive. I've built two pole barns for my wife's horses and two for my cars. I've also erected a metal shop building as well on the farm. The pole barns are considerably less expensive to build if you do it yourself. I ordered trusses from Home Depot, rented an extended boom forklift to install them, drilled the holes for the posts with my tractor, and ordered and installed the metal siding myself. I got metal frame sliding barn door kits from Southern States (actually, they are from National Hardware) and they went together very quickly. Just be aware that the concrete slab will probably cost you as much as the rest of the building structure.

I'd like to get the building dried in and the concrete poured by a contractor. After that I'll need to get busy on the rest.

Welcome to the GJ!
I just put on an addition to a metal auto body shop, but I managed to find used metal siding and an overstock of new metal roofing that was a bargain, so I can't tell you about pricing. Around 6 years ago, though, I poured the pad for that addition and I can tell you that the concrete was $105 a yard up here at that time. I'm told it's higher now...
You might check with Max Kendall for materials, may find what you're looking for. His main operation is located not too far from you... http://www.maxkendalllumber.com/

Greetings from central Virginia. I poured my 30x60 last June and concrete was $102 per yard for 4000psi mix. There is usually a discount above 30 yards.

I let my concrete finisher place the order and saved $5 per yard over street price. Every little bit counts!

If you are in the south central part of VA you should try Jones Truss in Halifax. They supplied my trusses and metal roofing for a great deal.

Good luck.
