Space needed for jackshaft openers?

I got my garage plans completed this week, and with the 11' wide doors the returns at the sides are only about 14". I want to use jackshaft as opposed to overhead openers (e.g., LM3800), and am in doubt that there will be enough space to fit them.

Can anyone using these openers tell me how much space is needed to the side of each door?

Well, from seeing the pictures of peoples install on this forum....I'm guessing you
only need ~6" from the track. Liftmaster states you need 1"-5" extension of the torsion bar past the bearing plate.

I think 14" is plenty. Remember the motor is going to mount right up at the top of the door on the torsion bar. I bet the total width of the motor is only 8-10"

here's the install manual from liftmaster:

I would say that 12-15" would be VERY generous. I think mine only hangs 8-10" off the end of the torsion bar. Don't forget to plan power to feed them.

Something I saw in a gallery pick here not long ago that I really liked (can't remember who): if you have more than one door and a return between them, mount both openers side by side in the middle. I think it's a much cleaner looking install that way.

I don't think so... you program it to the opener.

On the plus side, they come WITH each opener, and are wirelessly controlled. so you can put them wherever you want (that has an outlet).

kvom - you'll have plenty of room. I just had two 3800 series openers installed a week ago, and I only had just over 10" of space from the door edge to the wall.

Just to be clear, each side had only just over 10" of space - one opener per side.

Is anyone finding a good deal on the Liftmaster 3800? I'm going to need two of them in about three months.

Theyre on ebay for 300+30 shipping. Is that a price you can beat? I am looking for 1 or 2 to start with. That would make a total of 5 so far. pm me the price and i will start a group buy thread to see who is interested if you willing to help us out.

Thanks man!

Is it possible to have both openers operate either a single light or both lights together? I

I would be in for one if the price was right. I need a vehicle controller, outdoor keypad, and two openers for inside the garage, if possible.

Ok I went and measured mine.........they are about 8 in wide at the widest point which is where the shaft attaches. I have both of mine mounted in the space between the two doors. And they are about 2 1/2 inches from the center of the shaft to the top of the unit.

And currently they both operate a single remote light.
