Spare tire and hub mount

As I mentioned in another thread, I always carry a spare hub and bearings as well as a tire and wheel when traveling long distances with a trailer. I've mounted them a number of ways over the years, and finally got around to putting one on my boat trailer. Usually I mount them so the tire is vertical, but this trailer and tow vehicle are low, so I worry about the tire hitting going over a tall bump such as a RR crossing. I made a mount to hold it horizontally instead. In the past, I've just bought a stub axle, but since I'm retired and poor, I made one out of steel I had on hand. Any excuse to fire up the lathe and cut threads! Then I welded it to a piece of plate, and a U-bolt holds it on the trailer frame. If I have a bearing failure, it's easy to just slide the whole assembly off of the mount and slide it onto the axle. Of course, I can just change the tire if I get a flat. The only drawback is that I will have to slide the boat back a couple feet to remove the spare, but the boat only weighs 140 lbs., so NBD.

No, it clears it by a 1/2" or so. I don't see why it would wobble, though. I left clearance in case I had to mount a wheel with a different offset.

I built one like that, but mounted the tire vertically.

The stub is welded on a piece of tubing that fits in a 2 inch receiver, with a pin and set screw to eliminate slop.

For shallow beach launching you pull the pin and flip the tubing over and voila you have a trike trailer that's easy to roll out into the surf without sinking the tow vehicle.

I like it. Do you plan to use your tow vehicle's jack?

I've carried bearings with me, but not a full hub. Current trailer just had a spare wheel and tire..not sure if I'll do more than that

One thing that came to mind is that when you walk by the assy, you should give it a spin so the rollers rotate once in a while. Otherwise the race could get pitted over time.
