I read a few posts noting that the drive size itself is not what breaks plugs. While I agree that you can easily get 3/8 ratchets that are just as long or longer than 1/2 drive ratchets, I think there are two factors at play.

First is the mental aspect, also mentioned by others. I believe that is true, that when you grab the 1/2 drive over the 3/8 drive, mentally you are intending to apply more torque. Second is that 1/2 drive also starts you with a longer ratchet than 3/8. That said, if you pay attention to what you are doing, neither should be an issue.

A lot of this conjecture assumes the wrench operator HAS multiple choices in ratchets :D

The average shmuck probably has 2 to use (maybe 3 at best if you include 1/4" ) and when a standard length 3/8" 7-8 inch long ratchet doesn't cut it...

You just know they're gonna try to ham fist it loose with a bigger and longer 10-12 inch 1/2" drive ratchet :lol_hitti
