I went to change the upper spark plugs on my 2013 ram 4.7 engine but found that my spark plug socket was too large in diameter to fit into the recess the plug is in. What are you using to change the plugs on these trucks?

Is it a gasoline or a diesel engine? Because diesel engines dont have spark plugs, they have glow plugs which are very different from spark plugs

Wild guess here but it looks like a std 5/8" spark plug socket is what you need and that you likely have the standard 13/16". They are both really common sizes, you probably just need the smaller one based on pics I can find of the spark plugs used in your engine.

I think he is saying that his spark plug socket's walls are too wide and he needs a thin wall spark plug socket. Buy a thin wall deep socket of the proper size and push some hose in it.

Fair enough but I still think he's got a 13/16" socket.

Not sure if Chrysler changed yet but a lot of newer manufacturers have been switching to 9/16 or a 14mm plug compared to standard 5/8

Also try standard 5/8 or 16mm deep socket and use pen magnet to remove plug I have used this in a pinch before

This can no longer be said. The cats with the ARP heads have spark plugs. Just saying...

This info found in the reviews of the linked SK socket.

I own a 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 TRX with the 4.7 V-8, went to change the spark plugs on the intake side and could not fit a socket into the manifold. I tried 5 different sockets and none fit! So I ordered this socket, granted I was afraid it was going to be to long at 10", but it fit perfectly! I was so happy, got my plugs changed in less than an hour. If you are looking for a thin wall socket this is the one to change this plugs.

Thin wall like the others said, just curious why you're change plugs on a 2013 already?

I work at Dodge/Chrysler. I use this all day everyday.

Works great so far. and as for what Chrysler uses for spark plugs. Yes. They still use 5/8" plugs.

Why he is changing his plugs on a 13'. they have 2 sets of plugs as you may already know. Intake on top and exhaust buy the manifold. Exhaust ones are iridium plugs. Don't need to be change for 100K miles. Intake plugs are regular plugs. Change at 30K. Chrysler's recommended interval.

I don't have any experience on those engines but if the socket wall is all that is stopping you just take it to a grinder and make yourself a thin wall socket. Not exactly what I would call difficult...

That is crazy 2 different sets of plugs on the same engine

Is there any such thing as a spark plug that the Snap On double joint job (of the proper 5/8" or whatever size) can't get?

(edit) I guess those setups with headers where they have to use something that looks like an oxygen sensor wrench?

Sk day @ HJE is coming soon. Maybe this is the time to get the spark plug socket with an order.
Not sure if sk still offers a thin wall sparkplug socket. I bought one from amazon yesterday to have if needed. It was sold by apex tool company. Same company that sold me my sk g pro spline ratcheting deep offsets. May be Taiwan as sk jettisoned all foreign sk when ideal bought them in 2010. SK sold a lot of foreign made items to apex.

yes, that socket saves your *** on hemi truck plug changes...12 of em are not "easy" to get at with a normal socket, but the last four on the driver's side under the booster are damn near impossible to get at without that socket

I remember the ford ranger 4cyl engines having two spark plugs per cylinder back in the 80's, not sure which other ones did. I also have a motorcycle with two spark plugs and it's only a single cylinder bike, but that's not really uncommon for bikes.

Yep, ford did it in the 80s and even into the 99s (I think). Mercedes did it for a while on the V6/V8/V12 engines for a while, I think the V12s are still in production now. All of the Chrysler Hemis are dual plug too. Either way, I hope the SK works, but I know the snap on will. You always need to be careful changing plugs on the dual plug 4.7L engine as you can actually get some sockets in when the engine is hot and not get them out after. Ask me how I know...

I bought the sk to use on my toyota yaris. The plugs are in deep on the yaris.I thought it was kool. Plus w/ the sk I don't need a extension. I posted as a alternative to the snap on.

Recommended by a ram board was the husky brand (Home Depot). I'm getting ready to do the plugs on my 4.7.

Ford ranger 4 cyl. I know for a fact they did at least till 94'. Maybe as late as 97' or 98. I had a 93' and a buddy of mine had a 94' and they both had dual plugs.

I can't speak for other brand sockets but I know SO will work whether hot or cold. CM will not work at all and neither will the Duralast.

Did a big old American LaFrance gasoline engine for firetrucks have two sparkplugs in each cylinder? Like in the 1950s or 1940s? Two distributors/spark coils too?

*thread hijack warning*
Local FD has an old engine (1927?), pretty sure LaFrance that has two sparkplugs per cylinder. Inline six with a cam on each side down low driving side valves, each cam runs its own ignition system, conventional points and coil on one side and magneto on the other.

It's very common to need a thin wall spark plug socket on motorcycles. The OEM tool kit usually has one, in fact.

You would very likely find this thin-wall 5/8" (16mm) socket at your nearest powersports shoppe:
http://www.motionpro.com/motorcycle/partno/08-0239/

Twin spark plugs are not uncommon on motorcycles, too -- the later model DL650 V-Stroms, for example, use two plugs per cylinder.

I'm pretty sure it was an old husky that got stuck in there for me. Although it may have been a much older version of it since this was quite a few years ago.
