Spark plug socket opinions

I have every type from everybody and I use the Astro or GearWrench magnetic swivel sets a lot. Some of my favorite sockets are the Lock-It sockets that were made in the pacific north west but he lost his machining company he had contracted and stopped making them. They are the brass spring holding type. I saw them on a TV show in the nineties and tried some and have all sizes and they hold up super well and were super well made.
Can you post up a pic of the Lock-it socket? Looked on ebay and dont see any.

Socket with rubber insert Gaffer taped to a spare extension. Had a Mazda 2 with MZR - Duratech? - socket liked holding on the plug and letting go of the extension. Tape sorted it.
Cheap and from the parts bin, the British way.
Locking extensions is what you're missing. ;)

Expensive, use-specific tools is the Garage Journal way.

This the last place I have seen anything about them these are photo's of the long versions of 13/16 and 5/8 but they had a number of other sizes and short and long etc.. I think I first saw them on a Sunday morning show like Shade Tree mechanic or something like it. I talked to him when ordering some items and he told me he was friends of the Schley Products SP Tools US based SP not Australian based company and don't remember what else. He did try selling me the patents and drawings but I really like them but not enough to go in to the business and selling of sockets as he told me all the truck brands told him to off shore everything and lower the price and he and the SP Tools guy said to FO many times so they are good people. I still have the spare clips they give you with a socket but never needed to replace a clip in 20 plus years. His phone number may be on the sticker but not sure it's any good any longer.

Zoro is out of the 14mm zeal:3300CZ line:

3300C line is fully stocked with extensions etc

retailme not has a 20% off it seems but it doesnt work or take off anything on checkout. Capitalone offers 7% back through zoro also; making it a potential 27% off.

DRPD has the best US pricing on those sockets as far as I am aware and they are active on the forums.

Other options would be Zoro with a 20% off coupon or Palmac (same company as Koken USA, different face) and their 10% off for new subscribers.
Palmac has the 10%?

For Zoro, you need to make an account, log in, browse around viewing items, and you should get a coupon in your email within a few days.

I believe the codes are locked to a particular account, so I don't think you can use someone else's code.

Their Koken items drop ship from Palmac/Koken USA, so "unavailable" or "backorder" status might not be totally accurate.

Zoro's support is fantastic though, so just give them a call to see if they can get the Zeal models if that's what you want.

Palmac has the 10%?
Yeah, it's just a pop-up or banner message on their site:

Has anyone ever had this issue? Spark plug won't fit deep enough in the socket to engage the shank.

These are used 14mm NGK spark plugs from my Nissan Altima.

The spark plug socket is a Gearwrench 9/16th. The two behind it are 14mm Snap On sockets.

Just an observation.

does the gearwrench socket have something stuck in the upper "shaft" that wont allow the plug to fit in all the way? like an old insulator?

Not that I can see. Just the magnet.
I might have to inspect further.

I've seen a few Amazon reviews for similar sockets with similar issues, maybe even the same socket.

The weird thing is, I know I've used the socket before. Just not on these plugs/my personal vehicle.

I've had some...no matter the brand...with rubber retention that won't let go of the plug and out comes the extension with no socket. That doesn't happen often but it does happen and a huge pain in the ***.
Same lesson here. Any plug that lives well down in a hole gets the socket attached to a locking extension. Problem solved.

I've never had issues with the extension disconnecting from the socket and me not being able to correct it back up. My issue has been the rubber plugs wearing away and not holding the plugs.

Finally saw a set on ebay but its from down under:

I have a tapered ⅝" Snap-on SPS that works well enough that I trust it to hold a spark plug as it's lowered into the cylinder.

For BMW/Mercedes:

The Matco/Armstrong 12-pt magnetic, thin-wall is best in it's class.

For Subaru:

Snap-on 14mm press-fit deep wobble SPS with a 6" ⅜"Snap-on locking wobble.

But the most important tools to accompany any SPS are a 14.4 ⅜" Snap-on Impact and the 3-pc locking-wobble chrome extension set from Snap-On. Never fails.

⅜" Snap-On digital Torque wrench to finish.

Some old domestic stuff will, like 70s and prior. Lawn equipment as well I've seen it for some wild reason.
I can't ever recall seeing one, 13/16 was common and I recall 7/8 on farmall and deere tractors, 3/4 on lawn mowers it's possible I was using a 3/4 deep thinking it was just loose

If you’re talking about 3300CZ all sizes show in stock on Zoro for me.

Zoro drop ships from Ko-ken USA and they also show in stock. With Zoro if they show something is out of stock but you know the supplier has stock signing up for a restock notification or asking customer service to check with the supplier seems to get them to sync things up within a couple days.

Yep, the ceramic section may be extended compared to a regular spark plug

Entirely possible. I don't have any other spark plugs handy to compare.

But as I mentioned, I know I've used that Gearwrench 9/16" socket in the past without issues. I bought those two 14mm Snap On plug sockets specifically for my Nissan (especially the deep socket since my plugs are recessed into the valve cover), so those are the only plug sockets I've ever used on that specific vehicle.

I just found it interesting. I've seen reviews on Amazon describing similar situations with various different plug sockets, but the first time I've seen it myself in person. With most plugs lasting up to or even past 100k miles now, spark plugs changes are not as common as they used to be, but it still got me thinking about having more plug sockets on hand for possible situations like this that could prevent plugs from being installed/removed if I were working on something.

Have the magnetic Gearwrench / TEQ ones, with extensions. Have worked well for me. Tried the Duratech ones from Amazon, but they went back as they wouldn't fit over the electrode on Motorcraft plugs.

I’ve got a set of “new” Craftsman that work great for me. As a disclaimer though, I studiously avoid turning a wrench on anything that was built after the Reagan administration, so my needs tend to be much more basic.

Palmac has the 10%?

I have found that (with an zoro account), when I put stuff in my basket and let it sit there, after a few days I get an email reminder along with an offer of 15 or 20% off whatever is in my basket.

For anyone worried about having the plug socket coming off the extension, aside from the locking extensions mentioned above for straight line situations, I have these (though everything I have is straight line to the plug so never used it for that purpose) - Capri 12270. For angled situations where I'm worried about a socket getting lost/stuck, I use this in conjunction with a locking extension.
