Spark plug socket: Which kind do you prefer?

I realized that I don't have a proper spark plug socket. Last time when I replace them, I used a 16mm Craftsman deep socket. I was able to loose them, and then use a piece of rubber hose to fish them out and put them in. Quite tedious.

There seem 3 different kinds of spark plug sockets:
  1. With rubber insert
  2. With magnet
  3. Snap On retention socket

Which one do you prefer and why?

What about swivel spark plug socket? Or extension swivel spark plug socket?

I use whatever I grab first, usually rubber.

I got one with the rubber insert from ebay. It's a Williams import. Very nice socket for 6 dollars with free shipping included. Highly recommended.

I have used the ones with the rubber insert and the one with a clip inside, have not used the ones with a magnet but..... So far no preference.

In my experience the cheaper rubber insert sockets seem to leave the rubber behind in the plug when reinstalling them.

I've got a SnapOn with rubber insert and a swivel Craftsman with rubber insert. The C-man gets a ton of use as I prefer a swivel spark plug socket over a regular plug socket.

I like the KoKen sockets with the magnet inserts.

I still have my home made VW plug socket from 1964. I cut the 19 mm end off a VW wheel lug/spark plug tool kit wrench and welded a 3/8 drive socket in the cut off end. It works perfectly for starting plugs, then using a flex ratchet to tighten them. The rubber insert holds the plug.

I have a whole drawer of spark plug sockets. Standard ones, swivel ones, ones that flex with an extension on it. All kinds of them. It depends on the engine but I usually grab either the swivel ones or ones with extension built on.

I also have a 6" locking extension I use a lot with spark plug sockets. Nothing worse then reaching deep in the engine to the back plug and having the socket fall of the extension.

Another tool I love and can't believe it took this long to get is https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000IE5TSQ/?tag=atomicindus08-20 for starting the new plugs. It's amazing how easy it makes it. Seems kind of silly until you get one and try it and you won't believe how nice they are until you use it. And they are cheap anyway.

I've only ever used the rubber insert type (Craftsman USA regular, MAC flex), but have wondered about the magnetic sockets. Lots of times the rubber insert just won't let go.

I prefer the magnetic ones in various lengths with the ball swivel extension attached. I own the snap on wedge retention style but, I don't care for them because when I want it to release, it won't but, that's just me.

I choose option 4: Spring clips. :D

I personally prefer the magnetic insert sockets. I had to buy a Snap-On 13/16 to work on my 912. Socket cost me more than $20 in 1981 (more than $50 today), but it was the only way to reach into the sheet metal on the 356SC engine.

As it turns out, I was also able to acquire a Proto 5/8 magnetic for a couple dollars at the flea market, which I use on weedeaters and other 2 cycles, although I don't "have" to have magnetic for those applications.

Another fan of the magnets here. SOOOOOOOO much nicer than farting around with the crappy rubber inserts.

I'm not sure what brand my set is -- they're made in Taiwan, VERY nice quality, and I got them at a motorcycle shop.

He is trying to sell the company as his machine job shop raised the price too much to continue on with production. He only has what shows in stock on the web site with no new ones in the pipe line. They how ever do work really well. I use them at work all the time and they are made in the USA

I have to laugh anytime I see some retailer make a statement like the one in bold above.

The solution is dirt simple. When a supplier "raises the price too much", you just make them yourself and keep that mountain of profit the supplier is making and add it to whatever you've been making on the product. Yeah, there's that minor hurdle of needing a million dollars' worth of facility and equipment to make them yourself, but, if the real problem is a supplier charging you too much, then covering the cost of that manufacturing capability to bring it in house shouldn't be a problem.

Seriously, this line of plug sockets would fall into the category of special service tools and their comparatively low overall volume since the majority of them are aimed at very specific applications. Compare their prices to those of Kent Moore service tools of similar complexity, and it will be immediately obvious that the lockit sockets are grossly underpriced.

The typical retailer is looking to pay no more than 50% of the retail price for machined parts, and often much less than 50%. Let's say they're wanting to buy the $30 sockets for $15. It will take a fairly massive turning center to produce the parts with no secondary machining operations. Massive not because of the size of the parts, but due to the required blind broaching operations which generate relatively high forces in tough materials such as the Cr-V steel typically used to manufacture sockets.

The lathe, a magazine type bar feeder, and the necessary tooling will easily hit $250K. There's plenty of work out there that will generate $150/hr on a machine like this, with substantially higher volumes, so a typical shop is going to look for that same sort of gross hourly money (exclusive of material) for making these sockets.

Figure a buck apiece for material, another buck for heat treatment, 50 cents for vibratory deburring and cleaning, another buck for roll stamping or laser marking, and another 50 cents for black oxide. Total of $4 off the $15 the shop needs to work to. So, to generate $150/hr for the machining, you'd need to produce 14 pieces per hour, or one part every 4 minutes and 20 seconds with zero down time. In reality, 85% uptime is considered very good utilization, so that requires that your cycle time drop to 3 minutes and 40 seconds.

In the real world, considering the toughness of the material and the number of operations, you'd have to have the process well tuned to run a cycle time of 10 minutes. 6 parts/hr X $25/part = $150/hr on the machine. Plus another $4 for material and non-machining processes gives you $29/part.

If the product won't support a $60 pricetag in the market, then its a failure regardless of how useful it might be. Maybe it would support that price, but its a solid loser at $30. Good luck with selling a business where you lose money on every unit you sell.

Got a steal of a deal on a Matco magnetic set. Love it. no more worries about Dialectic grease getting on rubber and rubber letting go.

I hate rubber inserts in spark plug sockets, but have never even thought there was anther style. I'm going to track down new ones down.

I've only used the rubber type, never had any problems and you can find them everywhere.

Used a normal socket and a separate magnet when i started on my own car years ago.

I haven't used one with the rubber insert since I bought my magnetic Gearwrench socket a few years back. They are definitely the way to go and you can pick them up pretty cheap from Advance Auto with a coupon code.

I like the SO ball joint swivel. Probably rubber insert but don't remember.
