Long extension, swivel, magnetic, thin walled sockets are a life saver on anything that has a dohc or single cam with the plugs buried under the valve cover.
That being said back in the day you could duct tape the sockets/extensions together then insert a piece of 1/2" hose to extract and get the new plug started.

The situation depends on the tool.

I have had engines stuffed in bays tight enough where the header is 1/8" off the firewall. In that situation another "special tool" called a pass through ratchet was used to break the plugs free then remove and insert them by hand.
Rules would not let me use my "special tool" called a hole saw or I would have.

People complain about foreign junk. But the simple fact is when a special tool that you only need to use once or twice cost $60+(dealership/sears) it was hard to justify buying. Now you have places like HF and auto parts stores that stock such items where special tools have become common place at a fraction of the price and headaches are reduced.

Why would anybody use an impact wrench on a spark plug? BECAUSE THEY OWN A FORD. This is actually the Ford recommended procedure for removing spark plugs without breaking them on the Triton motor. The threads on these plugs extend into the combustion chambers and get covered in carbon deposits and refuse to come out. Many special tools have been produced to address the Ford broken plug problem. Finally, Ford figured out that you've got the best chance of removing them breakage by using an impact at full power.
