Diesels don't have spark plugs.......

For cars and mowers I have a non-contact tester that shows spark.
Inline spark lights that are great for mowers.
The 40 year old neon timing light for 2-cylinder tractors and mag work.

I would recommend you to have spark plug test light that you can test the wire or distributor or coil to see what problem is. i have two of them and it is very handy for me. i paid 6 dollars each at harbor freight as no problem that it is working good.

Eh... I have a 5$ toolaide inline deal I use. It works fine but they sell these things that are like sparkplugs with a clip on them, so you just put it in the boot like a normal plug and clip it to ground. Works just as well and its kinda cool to watch the spark jump around.

You can also get away with sticking a philips screwdriver into the boot and holding the HANDLE and keeping it about a 16th or so away from a ground point and having somebody crank the engine if you really wanted. I do this alot.

Be careful with that on "newer" cars. Long story short, the electronics don't like those kind of loads. Use a tester like mentioned above. I have many times used a plug with a piece of wire wrapped tightly around the base and the wired to ground on the car. A hillbilly version of the one mentioned above with the test clip.

I have a Blue Point spark tester, it looks like a pen that you press against a plug wire and you can see the spark inside the plastic cover

I also have what looks like a spark plug with a roach clip attached to it

You have to be in a dimly lit room; light is very dim ...

Maybe you weren't using the roach clip properly.

I know I've heard that term before. Maybe high school in the '70's?

This is what I've used for many years. It's adjustable so you can use it on anything.
