I find that a pair of these (any brand, even HF) work great and give you a straight pull - even when the plugs are buried deep in the cam cover.

I like the hazet 1849 pliers the best you can find knock off for cheap thru eBay for around 15-20 I paid much more about 60 for them but the best around for ignition wires

I just bought the three piece HF set of those long reach hose grip pliers, hoping to use them for that purpose on my Astro Van.

Haven't tried them yet.

Glad to hear they are a possible solution.

Heck, even the $12 ones at Autozone work pretty well. It saved me the trouble of pulling the #3 spark plug when I was doing a tune-up on my girlfriends 92 4 cylinder ranger where theres a split on the upper air intake just big enough to get the pullers in there. Never thought of just using hose pliers!

The only Mac tool I own, the one on the left. Works pretty well on the vehicles I own. This one is branded Matco, but its the same tool. (not my pic)

Before you put the wires back on, apply a light coat of silicone grease to the insides of the boots. Even when doing this, when you have 100K mile service intervals, the plug wires pretty much become one with whatever they are connected to, so the best thing is simply to replace them at the same time as the plugs.

It was a different story back when we were changing or cleaning plugs every few thousand miles.
