speaker placement

I have a set of polk audio studio 10 speakers that I've had for 24 years that I use in the man cave that can make the windows bulge but I'm redoing the lay out and don't know how or where to stand them. I now have them on top of some shelves but was wondering if I could hang them from the ceiling or would this affect the sound. Has any one done this and how.

I'm amazed the cone material is still intact.

Personally....I would go with some small Bose speakers that are much easier to mount...and just about as loud. I can't imagine owning big speaker boxes like that any more.....

But if you must....just mount firmly. If not sucure, they can vibrate themselves off the shelf and if loose, tends to not sound as good.

I built some shelves in the coroners to put speakers on. There are usually more studs in the coroners to take the bass without distorting the bass. Make sure you make the shelf good and sturdy, glue and screw together so you don't get unwanted vibration.

Here's a photo of one of my Bose speakers...2 metal "L" beackets & a little plywood shelf attached to them & a little "toe" rail around it so the speaker can't walk off.....its up in the corner next to the Castrol banner.

I have been running a set of Ultralinear Studio Monitors out in the shop for almost 18 years. Each has two 10" mains in them, two mids and a tweeter. They're arout 3 ft. tall and I have had them about 2 ft. off the floor.
I don't know much about critical audio placement, I followed the directions specific to My Klipschs' in the house, and they are not your normal speaker. Remember that high frequencies are very directional, lows not so much. Hanging them way up gets them out of the way but might impact their sound.
I am in the process of restoring a 1983 vintage set of Bose 901's for the shop. I found a source for new foam surrounds, and have the Bose Equalizer. Since I have an amp plenty strong enough to drive them, i figured why not? They are a conversation starter in todays world, thats for sure.

Yes if you hang them you will lose some bass. Sometimes it's quite dramatic. If you dont care about that then by all means go for it. If you like maximum low end get them against a wall, better yet at the corners. That way the speaker "loads" the wall and resonates the low frequencies.

Get some long speaker wire and experiment. Put them all over the place. Hang em, shelve em, find out what works for your ears and for the space.
