Speaking of Bugs.

What does everyone do to control spiders and other things that lead to annoying stuff like cobwebs and hanging thingies. I've tried sprays, and aerosol bombs but don't like the residue that gets left behind.

I have spiders and Box Elder bugs that really like to hang around. If the Box Elder bugs get in the walls of a heated building they multiply all winter and then they are everywhere! I picked up a product called Tempo WP (wettable powder). I mix it up at half strength and it kills everything. This is the stuff they use in restaurant kitchens because once it is dry, supposedly it is pretty harmless to humans. I have no worries about Carpenter ants, spiders, Box Elder bugs, or Asian Beetles. I usually spray the exterior perimeter of my house and garages once a year. It has a residual effect for quite awhile as I have gone almost two years in some instances.

I used to think this until I saw the results of a bite from a brown recluse.


Mothballs are an old trick to keep spiders from building nests in in the heater. I guess they cant stand the smell.

My garage interior was raw drywall, firetape and mud for about five years. During that time I had lots of critters.

I then finished taped and painted it and caulked the joint between the concrete slab and foundation wall. I also use bug spray around the lower edge once each year. The number of bugs has been reduced by about 90%.

I did the painting primarily to improve appearance and lighting. I had no idea that it would be so effective at getting rid of the bugs, especially spiders, but I'm glad it did!

Edit: I use the Home Defense stuff that Costco and others carry.

Demon WP (Wettable Powder) made by Syngenta. Great stuff, comes 4 water soluable packets per bag for around US$12. Most of the pest control guys I have talked to use a commercially available version of this product. I use one packet dropped in a 2 gallon garden sprayer around my baseboards, doors, windows, under sinks etc..every 3 months and NEVER see any critters crawling. I just wish it worked on mosquitoes.
