Just wondering :dunno: Has anyone ever checked the evaporator coil in their air conditioned car to see if there's any mold on it? It seems it would be an ideal location and condition for the development of mold growth.

There's actually products to spray in the air intake to prevent/mitigate that, or just use Lysol. Also make sure your drain is open.

I try to clean mine every 2 years or so. This house we bought in March 2013 I had a service company do the downstairs unit right away and the upstairs about a year later. Of course doing it myself I know all of the crud came off. I am only assuming they did a decent job since they don't want you looking over their shoulder. For $140 or so including freon check/charge and outside unit cleaning, it's a good deal. A lot of work and frustrating especially if it's summer. Have to be careful to either flush off any acidic cleaners real well with water or use non-acidic on the coils. Then it usually clogs the drain piping. Fun.
