Yes there are sockets for your square headed bolt. Look for 8pt or double square sockets.

For limited use, and if it isn't seized up badly, spline drive sockets will work. I hate to recommend them, but they are dirt cheap and can work on a lot of odd fasteners that you don't encounter too often.

If it is not rounded, 12 point sockets will work.

what do we have to do to quash this silly myth?

I seem to have to address this once a month.......ugh!

12 point sockets DO NOT fit on 4 point fasteners with any grip, and if you try to make it fit, you will likely ruin the fastener. 8 point yes, 12 point no. Take a geometry class, please!

I had to have a 1 5/8" square nut removed from an old farm disk (holds the entire gang of disk blades on the shank) and the guy at the implement dealer used a 1" impact and a 12-point socket. I was very skeptical but it worked without incident--off, and then on when I returned the next weekend.

Personally I've bought 8-point sockets for my normal needs, but the one for that application was upwards of a hundred bucks. :willy_nil

Actually OLD style 12pts do fit square fasteners just fine.

It's when all the manufacturers switched to the updated design (SK Suregrip, Matco Opti-Torque, Snap-On Flank Drive, Gearwrench Surface Drive, etc.) that is made to apply the torque to the flats and stay off of the corners that they no longer fit on 4 point fasteners.

To the OP; A set of 8 point sockets are great to have. You won't use them daily, but there are times where an adjustable wrench just won't fit.

Oh yeah a set of 8pts are useful and singles are easy to find used.
