specialized hand drill ID

Hi,
can anyone tell me what this tool was for? I mean besides drilling holes. It looks like it holds round stock and drills in the end but for what? The threads are so fine it takes forever

With threaded rod like that I would say that it is not for drilling holes. It looks more like some sort of puller.

X2. It would take ages to drill a hole and then unthread the screw to back the drill out.
Seems just like a specialty puller that someone mounted a drill bit into.

Ok... So a puller makes more sense than a drill... torture tool not a bad guess
If anyone knows just what it's made to pull I'd appreciate knowing, it's just one of those things I pick up because it gets my curiosity

Maybe a specialized tap starter?
I dont think puller because the body is cast and would probably break
With any real force applied

Ok go ahead and laugh now...At first I thought it was for taps but nixed that idea. the more I look at it, the more it looks like a wine bottle cork opener (ok start laughing) ha, ha old woody has lost it...

take the collar and drill off and see what it looks like. I don't think it's a puller but rather a tool for peening a rivet or something like that. maybe had a foot on it, or maybe even a clamp meant to bolt onto a drill press or mill to hold a part.

Cast but not very rough

I'm going to say puller as well. If it were for a tap, the tap threads would have to matc the lead screw thread pitch.

No tapping devices are threaded because taps have different pitches, obviously.

Maybe put a reamer in it and do valve guides?
I'm not seeing puller, but maybe a press of some sort?

It looks like the hole for the big screw is not drilled in the center of the casting. This thing may be a home built contraption made out of random parts.
