Specialty lighting advice..

My name is neal Smith, I have been lurking on these forums for a couple of weeks now.. I am 3/4 thru the build on my garage...it is a 22x28, 1.5 story... http://photobucket.com/clocked ...I operate a small business called Clockwork Racing Engines.... http://www.clockworkracingengines.com/ ... I work on small 2 stroke engines for use in model RC cars.....

I am looking for advice on possible lighting solutions for my shop... I spend much of my day looking thru a magnifier working on small brass sleeves. I am planning to have 8-10 4' T8 fixtures, plus I am looking for some sort of spotlight that can be mounted above and behind me, more or less directed along my line of sight........ I would prefer something mounted overhead so it is not in my path when I am working..... I am not too familiar with the different characteristics of all the different lighting options..... HID,LED,FL,Halogen etc.... I am looking for something that will give me good color definition on the brass sleeves that I am working on.... I have no issue making a ovhead rail the drops down off the ceiling to mount the lights too... As long as I can walk under it I am fine... What I beleive would be idea would be some sort of medical exam light...but the cost is beyind what I want to spend....Plus I would like to have this same sort of rear overhead spot lighting at my other work stations....

I'm currently working on getting a couple of dental lights set up over my workbench. Bought them on EBay for $125-$150 shipped. The brand is Pelton & Crane. They were built between from the 1960's on. They were built to focus at approximately 28" away from the object they are illuminating and to light up an area around 6" x 8" (your open mouth).

I don't have them mounted yet, since I am still building the custom brackets to mount them on the wall. Please follow the link in my signature for more detail than you probably want about these lights...

The Pelton & Crane dental lights do require a special bulb, but these lights are EVERYWHERE (look at your dentist's light...likely a P&C)...the bulbs are easily available on Ebay for $7.50 each. These are 25-volt halogen bulbs (there is a transformer in the arm, to reduce 110 volts to 25 volts).

My eventual plan is to replace the halogen bulbs with an LED module...I've found 24-volt modules online for reasonable prices.
