Specific thermostat requirements

I have a propane Mr Heater that I’d like a new thermostat for. No AC just heat. Currently using a cheap digital thermostat. While the thermostat works fine, I’d like to have a programmable thermostat. Mainly, I’d like it to run once per 24 hrs to bring the temp up to 65* and then stay shut off the rest of the time unless I go out there and want to run the heater to work out there.

I know programmable thermostats exist but everyone I’ve messed with assumes the building is heated full time to a certain temp and then raise the temp when programmed to do so. I just want it to run once per 24 hrs and stay off the rest of the time.

Does such a thermostat exist?

I don't know of any standard residential thermostat that could do that, maybe someone else does. Might be easier to wire a timer on to the heater and program it for what you want. Just leave the thermostat in heat mode, then when the timer allows, will pass power or signal to the heater.

Why heat it up once and shut off? Wouldn't you use less energy just maintaining a lower setpoint? Or are you trying to time the 65 degree mark for when you most often go out there?

Look into the wireless SKYTECH remote thermostats. there is a version that i believe does that.

The receiver hooks to the gas valve and you program the remote. However you will have batteries in the remote and the receiver.

Im trying to find the model im thinking of, i know it was a touch screen model

I think this will work, it has the timer built in.

This one can plug into the wall on the receiver so no batteries there then attaches to the millivolt valve, not allowing any volts to go to the valve.

but sky tech has an entire line of thermostats, so if this does not work maybe they have a version that will....

Because that’s what I would like to do if such a thermostat exists.

You will burn up more fuel having it swing like that every day. Better to set it to 45-55 degrees and leave it there then bump it up when you are working out there.

If you insist, wire in a 24 hour timer on the stat wires so it only runs during the day time, or times you typically are out there.

I will have weeks where i am in the shop every day. I set it to 65 and forget it until the project is done then set it back to 55.

Any thermostat or relay( gold contacts ) has to made for millivolt system. Lighting timer that controls a relay to give u off on and off and ur stat in series with relay contacts.

Look at the Emerson Sensi. https://sensi.emerson.com/en-us Their app allows you to setup scheduling for specific days and times. Assuming you have Wifi access.
That is the thermostat that I'll be using in my garage. Like wes73 said, it seems as though the scheduling app allows for the perfect amount of customization. A side note, many power companies have rebates/coupons for the Sensi so make it super affordable.

Can you not set your programmable stat to run up to your desired temp for one portion of the day then back to low temp for the other periods.....or does it get too cold such that the stat doesn't go low enough.

Maybe. Lowest I’ve seen the shop get is mid 40s after a week of cold weather. Normally, it stays around low to mid 50s. I’m sure after an extended cold snap it would probably get to freezing in there but it never has since I heat it every time I work out there. I don’t work out there every day so the heater currently doesn’t run every day but at least a few times per week….sometimes more. A regular programmable thermostat might work. Thanks for the input.

pretty sure you can use a regular programmable tstat. set the high point for say an hour, or whatever time you think it needs to reach that , then back to 40 for the rest of the programs .
