I am looking for specifications for the MR Cool 12KBTU DIY. Looking to cool and heat my 350 sf. dorm above my workshop. There might be days that I do not have any heat on the shop below, but the dorm is very well insulated with an outside entrance. Worst temp in the winter will be -15*C (5*F) and according to heat loss calculator I should be able to heat it with 10,500 BTU. I know they make the hyper heat model but was hoping the 12K DIY from Costco still makes heat at that low temperature and cannot find any performance specs on this unit. Perhaps someone has gone through a cold winter with theirs and can tell me your experience. Also, I see they say Max fuse size is to be 20 amp, can you run this on a 15 amp breaker? Thanks for the help.

No the diy model stops heating effectively at about mid 40s. If you need heat I’d look at another brand like Mitsubishi or lg. I have this mr cool diy. Not sure about the hyper heat but I’d be cautious.

According to the Mr Cool site the DIY cools down to 5 degrees.

https://mrcool.com/mrcool-diy/

Manual for 2nd generation says 20 amp with # 12 wire so that is what must be used.

What they do not say is inverter minis are sensitive to power surges and surge protectors are almost a must. In this day and age with computer chips in everything whole house surge protectors are a good investment.

Good luck

I see that it cools down to 5*F in their add, kinda weird as I was hoping they would say what it heats down to. They do say it continues to heat at low temps, just no specification found. Thanks for the 20 amp circuit requirements information.

I have the Hyper Heat 18k unit. So far the lowest the temp that has been here is 15 degrees and I put a heat gun on the air coming out, it was 110 degrees. No electric coils.

I haven't seen extended performance data for the Mr Cool units. Documentation for them seems lacking in general.

Attached is the heating performance for the 12K 15 Seer chinese units I'm running. These appear to be about the same as the lower end Pioneer/Mr Cool ones so assume the Mr Cool DIYs performance will be similar unless you can find documentation to the contrary.

The Mr Cool DIY are basically same as first gen pioneer.
I have the second gen pioneer which is higher SEER/HSPF and more advanced.

Specs can say whatever they want, but when it gets low 30s outside it is a struggle to keep the inside warm. I am only asking for 60s inside

Cooling at low Temps is often geared towards people using these to cool equipment, like servers

Exactly what I was looking for, thanks. It sure drops off even at 17*F , I will look into other units and brands that specifically produce more heat at the lower outside temperatures.
