Speed Reducer for Rockwell Drill Press

I saw this on Craigslist. It is listed as a speed reducer for a "Rockwell 17" drill press. I have never seen anything like this. It appears to attach directly to the quill and spindle.

Yep, takes up valuable quill space. You don't seem them much, so if you ever need parts, be ready for the $$$$. IIRC it has a 4.5-5:1 reduction in it.

Good memory. Actually 4.7 to 1 double-reduction gears.

It's a Model 17-860 Slow speed attachment.

Only fits on the 17" drill presses with #2MT spindles, not the JT33.

Reduces working height by about 7" but significantly adds to the versatility of the drill press if you need very slow speeds for larger drills.

$135 is a decent price for that accessory, assuming it's in working condition.

Bought a 17" Delta at a local auction a few months ago with one of these and a 20N Jacobs ball bearing super chuck. Was surprised at the lack of bids, figured most didn't realize what it was, got it for $125. That's a pretty good price for the reduction unit, but make sure it comes with the special 2MT adapter with the drive gear on it. I've never looked for one, but I would think they're pretty tough to come by.
