I'm looking for a new used compressor. I don't need anything huge, just enough for light duty work (no sanders, blasting, etc). Found this listed for $100 obo. The guy says it needs a new valve kit. I've never worked on a compressor, but would be totally game to do it if it's worth it. What's this thing worth, and how expensive/difficult is it to fix the pump?

Dayton Speedaire 2HP Air Compressor

MODEL LR22132
HP- 2
HZ 60
LO VOLTS --115-- AMPS 24.0
HI VOLTS-- 230-- AMPS-- 12.0
I think it's a 20+ gallon tank. the dimensions of the tank are:
51" CIRCUMFERENCE
26 " LENGTH

MODEL# 2Z499 COMPRESSOR PUMP
AIR COMPRESSOR MODEL 3Z421G
1 PHASE 1 STAGE

You had better call Graingers and find out if a valve kit is available and not made obsolete.
If it is then you would have yourself a good little compressor. Parts would probably run somewhere around $25 and it should take about 3hrs to do a valve job

Those are tough little compressors so it would be good candidate for your first starter compressor. Since it's still mobile it would be useful if later in life you got a stationary 60 gallon vertical (ie 2nd compressor).

Check out Speedaire in person. Bring cash but big bills for your target price (say $80 so 4 twenties). Then have additional money but in another pocket of smaller bills like $5's. Point out problems with compressor and see if he'll bite for $80 or slightly more.

Good luck. Can't go too wrong with that Speedaire.

Over here....
I have the 60 gallon verticle version of that Speedaire.

The parts are readily available on the net. Get the compressor data and do a lil' googling.

I replaced the compressor pump on mine because the owner didn't do the run in time when it was new (on it AND a replacement pump!!!! DUH!!!). Fried the crankshaft on one and the front bearing on the other. Even a new crank and rod were available but the cost was near what a new pump was anyway......so I bought the compressor pump only. These are made in......you guessed it.....China.

Here's one link (there are many on the net - Amazon is always good, too):

Thanks for all the advice. We'll see if it works out. If not, then I get to keep shopping, which let's face it, is half the fun anyway! :D

I have it's big brother, a 4hp 2z630 with 60 gallon vertical tank, that I paid $300 and put another $100 getting it set up just the way I like. It is a very nice compressor. Not flashy with outrageous output claims--just solidly built in the USA.

btw--valves are simple on these. Just flapper valves. Take all of 30 min to replace.

I have a similar one I bought second hand. I think it has been used a ton. The pump has issues. Past 110 psi it struggles. I was going to throw a valve plate on it, but grainger tech support suggested I check the rings first. To do that pull the dipstick and put seal the hole with your hand. A few seconds later pull your hand off and see if it puffs air at you. If so the rings are letting air by. For my compressor at least I'm not sure it's worth fixing by the time I install rings, new pressure switch (it's shot), and potentially new valve plate and more.
