Are speedaire compressors worthwhile? If so, how much should I offer for this? BTW, It's a 100 gal tank.

TIA,
Brian

That's a good quality compressor, I think the motor plate shows its three phase power. What are they asking?
They said to make an offer. Is this something that can be used at home? *Not fully upto speed on 3-phase vs single.* :(

The key to it is to find out who the pump manufacturer is. I bought a Speedaire, 80 gallon a few years ago, from the '70's and the pump is actually a Champion. The previous owner already put a single phase motor on, so I didn't have that issue. You'll be looking at $4-600 for a new (good) motor to run that.

That 60 gallon unit is a single stage pump. Depending on the price and your needs, it could be a decent unit.

This 60 Gal Speedaire compressor came out in one of our local ads (Philippines). Do you think it's a good unit?

Thanks a lot for any feedback.
That one's a Campbell Hausfeld. It's the same one they rebadge for a lot of retailers including Home Depot and Lowes, as well as sell under their own name. I had one and paid $399 US for it brand new.

The 100 gallon in the OP's pics, I couldn't say who made that pump. It's important to remember, Speedaire is like Sears, doesn't actually make anything, it's all rebadged products by other manufacturers. Not necessarily a bad thing, but as Chevelle said the key is knowing whose product you're getting.

Call WWW Grainger for information. SpeedeAir is what we use for fire sprinkler service. The only problem with current models is the amperage draw is more than what is indicated on the rating plate. China Chit motors. But the whole unit gives good service, 12 years or more.

We installed 2 or 3 in January and I ordered 4 today for more sprinkler jobs.

Thanks a lot for your replies.

I'll go check the compressor. It will be a 3 hour drive back and forth. Looks like the pump is US made but the ads did not show the motor pic so don't know if it's still the original.

If I can get a good deal on shipping ( USA to Philippines ) I might spring for this instead of the used Speedaire.

http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_158284_158284

Looks like it has slightly better CFM and is 100% duty cycle.

Will buying a 13 year old Speedaire 60 gal 3 hp compressor still worthwhile to do? I'm in the Philippines so I'll have to factor shipping cost from USA to here. Taking that into consideration the price the local seller wants will be like $300-350 for the compressor if it was still in US soil.

Any comments will be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Jay,

That's not much of a compressor for that much money. I would keep looking.

Three hour drive huh? Must have been 6 or 7 kilometers away.....

I have already forgotten, Are you in Mandaluyong, Quezon City or ??

I'm in Pasay City. The compressor is in Tagaytay upwards south of the metro.

I just want to be able to run the air grinders / drills / HVLP spray guns decently ( one at a time and for garage use only). No sand blasting. Will the 3 HP 60 gal cut it out?

My other option is an IR SS3L3 or the SS5L5 from Northern Tool. Still waiting for the forwarder to give me a shipping quote from LA to Manila.

Thanks

WOW, what do you think shipping is going to run you?

I reckon shipping would cost around $300-400. Dang ... US built compressors are hard to come by my side of the pond. Market is flooded with generic Chinese compressors that either don't last or don't pump as much air as the product label states.

Jay,

That compressor is not going to cut it running air grinders or a big air drill and would be marginal running a spray gun (most Sata or Iwata HVLP guns require 10 to 15 CFM).

It is fine for impact wrenches but air hogs will run it down in a hurry. Air grinders will need something in the 5 HP, 18 to 19 SCFM at 90 psi to keep up. That will put you in a 60 to 80 gallon tank.

If you plan on using multiple grinders, drills, sanders and other large CFM air tools in the future, I would look at a 7.5 HP compressor.

Jay,

Of those two, I would get the second one but to be honest about it, for another $200 you can step up to this compressor:

Quincy Compressor

It is also sold at Northern and IMO is a lot nicer compressor. The pump is rated at a 50,000 hour rating and it has a 2 year warranty that is increased to 5 years if you buy their startup kit.

At the rate our dollar is dropping against the peso, give it a month or so and your peso will increase to cover the other $200.

Quincy never crossed my mind if you didn't mention.

I'll wait for shipping quotes first from the forwarders to see where the budget will take me.

Thanks a lot.

@ GeorgiaHybrid

I was quoted by a freight forwarder $2,000 to ship the Quincy 2V41C60VC to me here in the Philippines. Paying more for shipping than the price of the compressor really was not attractive for me.

That said I purchased the used Speedaire 60 Gal 3 HP 4b236 for $400 delivered to me. My question is can I use this tank and upgrade it to a higher capacity pump and motor? At least I can ship a pump and a motor in a regular box which would cost me only $70.

What are my options for pumps and motors if possible? I don't know if Speedaire uses the same tank for their 135psi and 175 psi compressors.

Thanks a lot.

Jay

Jay,

No problem using that tank with another pump and motor. You might need to modify or replace the motor/pump mount base but that would not be a problem. I can't believe that someone couldn't add that compressor to a container that is headed your way for a LOT less money than that.

Hell, we air freighted a beam to India on one of our jobs for less than that....

Thanks. It turned out that the compressor was not used much and was still in good condition except for the pressure switch which was damaged during shipment to Philippines. The owner did not repair it anymore and had kept the compressor on storage till he decided to sell it to me. I got a few freebies too including a Speedaire air reg / filter / oiler. Stored for quite some time but the filter inside was still new and the oiler didn't have a trace of oil in it. Considering shipping cost it's as if I got the compressor for free.

Also included was an air hose, a CP 787 3/8" drill and a CM Pro electrical cord reel.

Yes there are cheaper ways. Will be waiting for a chance when a relative ships a 40 ft container back home where I can slip a bigger compressor in.

Frankly speaking I fell in love with the Quincy compressor link you gave the moment I saw it. LOL :)

Glad to know that I can slap a better pump / motor on the Speedaire tank if I choose to go that route.

Thanks

Is this belt guard a good design? It covers the pump heads too when fully installed. Doesn't it make the pump head top hotter since one is enclosed and the other partially covered already. Thinking to cut off the portions covering the head.

The large pulley acts as a fan when you have the front cover on the belt guard. Notice the fan shaped center webs of the pulley. You'll feel air being blown across the compressor head. I'd leave it as is, just put the belt guard cover on.
