I found this in a new local thrift store this evening. Never seen one, anybody else know about 'em? They're asking $40 but it's probably negotiable.

Yes, I have an incomplete one somewhere around. It's for testing grain moisture. They were reputed to be very accurate but were a bit of a chore to use especially when busy in harvest so were quickly superseded by the Marconi type which uses electrical resistance.
I last saw one in use in 1991, and that one is now in a museum.
Nobody seems to collect moisture meters, except one of my nephews.

Now that I have looked at some how-to videos this kit appears to be complete except for the two steel balls and the calcium chloride needed to actually perform a test. There is a pint can included, with no label, but I believe it is empty. I haven't bought it yet, am not sure if I want it. The wood box is neat though!

Amazing, these are still made in a new version and you can buy them new for around £800 in different sizes!

It seems cans of the stuff to put in it cost about £28.
I never knew they were used in the construction industry as well.

Those old ones did come in nice wooden boxes, but unfortunately the one my Father had the box was broken last time I saw it.
This is one of those instances where I prefer to use the new technology, and just stick an electronic probe in to a heap of grain, press a button and get an instant digital readout of moisture and temperature. I do have to calibrate this against test results from other people's meters though.
