Specifically in the midwest/east (so fir probably does not include Douglas fir)

SPF - Spruce/Pine/Fir, a very general classification of common, construction lumber. Usually spec'd as #2 and better which has to do with the number and size of knots.
SYP - Southern Yellow Pine. Typically from "tree farms" in the SE. Probably fewer knots as those trees are pruned. Also, likely wider growth rings, if that matters.

If you check Menards online (the only place I can find online lumber pricing), 2x12x20 SYP is about 40-50% MORE expensive. Add another 10-20% for Douglas fir (likely different pricing structure on the West coast).

Why the big markup on SYP?

SPF has about half the strength of SYP, or so said my architect and engineer.

The SYP I got is beautiful straight grained strong timber, had a few knotholes. Much harder to hand-drive nails into.

I wanted to give it a try and had an application. But if I was at all concerned about loading I would just go with an LVL.

Canada doesn't grow SYP, so cheap imports don't keep the price down. Few realize how much imported wood from Canada depresses prices, or how the government there gives away public-owned timber to subsidize jobs.
