I've already read this thread -

The TLDR was A dont do it, B, buy a kit if you do.

1st - I'll probably do it despite the negative - its not for me, its for a friend.
2nd- I like to do everything the hard way, and it will be much more economical for me to build than for him to buy.

So has anyone formed their own helix handrail? If so, any pointers? I've got a tube roller, but this seems like it would be a world of pain best case.
Is the best option just to job out the handrail to someone with a cnc roller?

had to talk a guy out of retirement to show us how
two 20 foot long steam tubes and a complex jig to keep it right side up

I did iron work when I was first out of college. I remember installing a spiral stair case. We got it all in place and realized the fab shop didn't get it right. They tried again and still didn't get it right. 3rd time was the charm. In other words, good luck and don't be surprised if it takes a few attempts to get it all perfect.

Since you have a roller, roll your tube to a diameter equal to the outer distance between two steps 180* apart: (NOT the diameter of the stair!)86607BF8-3474-4A56-B51F-CD55F83E634A.jpegThen spread it.EAB71E40-E324-480A-8501-2B4C95907FC2.jpegThat is how the metal kits do it. They are not shipping a 15’x5’ dia helix.

Thanks - That's super helpful! I'll update the thread with how it turns out!
