Spiral Staircase

I still have a lot to do with the garage....but I at least have the staircase partially in to go up to the 'attic'.....

I still have some minor 'adjustments' to make and finish out the upper part.....but now I can at least get up to the second floor without a ladder.

Not my first choice for garage attic access but it looks good. Will those lights need additional fire stopping or are they fully insulated kind?

Thats great ! Some will say it limits what you can put in the attic. I say thats probably a good thing.
I may someday switch to spiral to get some floor space back . My 2 car
(end to end ) portion went to a one car after adding stairs . Making my 4 car shop a 3 car shop.

When you look at the small footprint of these stairs vs traditional....it's a clear winner.....

If you look in front of the stairs, that section of floor is removable....it's about a 4'x6' section.....that should handle the 'larger' items.....

As for the lights....I'll be using CFL's so the heat will be a lot less.

I assume this garage is not an attached. By me there is no way the fire inspector would pass that because, it would act as a chimney in a fire situation.

I used to sell these years ago. Code then required a banister in the middle of the thread. As you have not done the hand rail yet, you may consider adding that for safety, especially if any children will ever be around.

Yep....detached 2 car garage......I ran the idea past the inspector before I did it....."as long as it is just for access to the attic...".

This is what the outside is looking like....so far.....still have a lot to do....

Looks great to me. I am going to do the same thing. While it would not be my first choice if I had the space, I do not either and so spiral the way I am going as well. I do have outside access to the second floor off of a deck, so larger items can go up if needed.

Q: where did you get your stairs? And what size are they?

if its all garage it wouldnt matter...you'd still have to maintain the separation between garage and house all the way up to the underside of the roof decking

Another way to get access with minimal footprint is to use double pitch or alternating tread stairs. I find them much easier to use than a spiral stair. A person can also carry something much easier while climbing them.

It's California......heat not required......

The upper section is going to be used for storage, wifes art studio and a play area for the kids.....we think the spiral staircase is the safest way for the youngun's to make it up and down.....we don't need any more trips to the emergency room.......

We picked it up Saturday from a local "Iron Shop" show room....

For anyone thinking about it.....the plain steel would have been about $1200....but the diamond plate is thicker steel and looks better....about $200 more...

And yes, we did get the extra banisters for the middle.....I just haven't installed them yet....

Since I built my new Detached Garage 10 years ago, I built a permanent staircase to the upstairs loft (which takes up more space than I would like). I have been getting outstanding ideas from this website for months now, and I may have access to a Spiral staircase that has been laying outside between two local businesses for years. Just might be free for the taking (just to remove).

Because my loft right now is being used for parts storage, (later I want to use 1/2 for storage and the other 1/2 for a Poker/Bar play area) my thoughts are...adding a outdoor shed, adding an access door in the floor with a dolley and an electric cable lift, and the Spiral stairs instead of the "standard" stairs.

These will really free up more space for me...I have seen some great ideas and photos that I have used, or plan on using in the near future.

I have an old Coke Machine, Poker table, 6 retro green chairs and an outdoor bar with stools that I would love to set-up in the loft (i saw a great idea on another post with his loft area all done in cedar...Sharp!) That Spiral staircase would be a great addition to the look and feel of my "Man Castle".
