I went to the air force museum today. One of the ballistic missiles was held together with spline head bolts. Interesting since this is the ONLY time I have seen a spline head bolt!

Anyone seen other applications of these bolts?

Used quite a bit in aviation. Lots of aircraft bolts are spline. I've never seen them anywhere else though, unless they were aftermarket replacements.

Funny, I read the title, and immediately thought "Air Force!"

The difference between spline and 12-point is the shape of the 'points', spline are square, while 12-point are pointed. Also spline can be internal (like socket head) and is used on military (Air Force) radio equipment.

VW have used internal spline bolts in the past, the six bolts that hold the driveshafts to the gearbox outputs are spline, I think the cylinder head bolts on some of the older petrol engines were also spline. Never seen an external though.

I was at HF the other day and they had both metric and SAE spline socket sets in stock. I was about to buy them when I thought "When in my life have I ever seen a spline bolt in use?". :lol_hitti

You know you're addicted to tools when you almost buy something you'll probably never use. :D

Nope, you're only addicted when you actually DO buy something you'll probably never use!

Once upon a time I did a valve job on an Opel from the 60's, and it had internal spline bolts on the cylinder head bolts. Although not sure, I don't think Torx had been invented yet.

Just wondering how to tell the difference from spline and 12 point bolts?

Germans love triple square.

Asians love a "double-hex" aka 12 pt hex.

Pure spline is mainly aircraft fasteners.

Angle of the fastener pick up points is the clue.

If you have to ask, then u need to use the Google.
